Arsenal in talks to appoint Dortmund's Sven Mislintat as chief scout - sources

Borussia Dortmund's highly respected chief scout Sven Mislintat is in the frame to take over the same role at Arsenal, sources have told ESPN FC.

Mislintat has been credited with a number of Dortmund's most successful signings in recent years, including Robert Lewandowski, Shinji Kagawa, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ousmane Dembele.

Bayern Munich ended an attempt to hire Mislintat as their new technical director in August, but sources say Arsenal are in talks to appoint him as their chief scout.

Steve Rowley, who has held that job at Arsenal since Arsene Wenger took over as manager in 1996, is reportedly close to leaving amid a backroom shakeup to modernise the club's transfer dealings.

Neither Dortmund nor Arsenal would comment on Mislintat, though a source close to the North London club told ESPN FC that nothing has been finalised in regards to Rowley's future.

Hiring Mislintat would be the biggest sign yet that Arsenal CEO Ivan Gazidis is serious about making big changes behind the scenes, as he promised after Wenger was handed a new two-year contract in the summer.

Plans to appoint a director of football appear to be on hold after Wenger publicly baulked at the idea, while chief transfer negotiator Dick Law has yet to be replaced after stepping down in September.

Mislintat has become one of the most sought-after talent spotters in Europe after helping identify and recruit a long list of young stars to Dortmund since joining the club in 2007.

He enjoys a very close relationship with Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc, but had a highly publicised falling out with former coach Thomas Tuchel in 2016 after a January move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Oliver Torres collapsed.

Remember when we had an overhaul of our fitness staff... ...and it made no difference? Remember when Bouldy came in as assistant... ...and it made no difference? Remember when Gazidis was brought in to help Wenger... ...and it made no difference?

Well here we go again...

Yes no point getting excited about Arsenal bringing in the man credited for recruiting multiple world class players like Lewandowski, Dembélé and Aubameyang for Dortmund... All three of them exploded soon after they were acquired for what later turned out to be very modest transfer fees.

It won't matter as long as Wenger is here.

He'll buy only who he deems fit and veto any other suggestions.

He is the ultimate megalomaniac.

Its official. Mislintat in, Rowley to help with scouting:

Sven Mislintat appointed head of recruitment

Sven Mislintat - one of Europe’s most respected player recruitment experts - is joining us from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

He is credited with creating the pipeline of young talent at Dortmund which has produced the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Shinji Kagawa and Ousmane Dembele.

Sven has been at Dortmund for 10 years and becomes our head of recruitment with responsibilities across the first team and academy. He starts in December and will work closely with manager Arsène Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis, plus other coaches, the background analytics team and our global scouting network.

Arsène Wenger said: “We are delighted that Sven is joining us. Identifying and developing talent is a core part of our philosophy and Sven has an outstanding track record over many years. We look forward to him taking our existing recruitment approach forwards.”

Meanwhile our long-serving chief scout Steve Rowley, who has been responsible for unearthing many talents over his 25 years of employment with the club, has stood down from his role but will continue to maintain his relationship and support us with ad hoc scouting on a consultancy basis.

Wenger said, “We would like to thank Steve Rowley for all his hard work over many years for the club. He has been a key figure in our recruitment of so many top players and has travelled thousands and thousands of miles, watching hundreds of games for us during his time at the club. We wish him well for the future.”

Mislintat to scout the next Ozil/Alexis/PEA/Lewandowski - only for Wenger to start the next Welbeck, Walcott, et al. :D

Read the last few pages. This is something to get excited about, not 'who cares'.

At a minimum, he's probably already got an idea of who to bring in. Let's hope he's trusted with his assessments.
