Arsenal Staff

Not only is the club stale in terms of the manager, the staff at the club is a complete debacle and is even more stale then Wenger.

Our club is not run well from top to bottom.

Colin Lewin: Been at the club since 1995!!! Surely with the amount of injuries we get in the past and our failure to keep our footballers on the past you'd think about moving on a guy that has been at the club since 1995? Fresh ideas, innovative change. STALE.

Tony Colbert: Been at the club since 1998. Oversees the fitness and conditioning of the players.

Garry Peyton: Which goalkeepers have improved at the club since Lehmann? We have had shocking goalkeepers for years. How does this guy not get any of the blame? He has not delivered one top notch keeper for 12 years.

Boro Primorac: Been at the club since 1997. Another one of Wenger's tight knit team which has been stale for years.

STALE STALE STALE!! All these guys need to be moved on with Wenger when he leaves. The club has to re-invigorate and find backroom staff with young and fresh approaches and ideas.

Chelsea have 3 assistant first team coaches. We have one. They have two goalkeeping coaches. Four first team fitness coaches.

Compared to our backroom staff is it clearly the whole backroom staff need more numbers and a complete change.

Colin Lewin left about 6/7 years ago

But yes Boro Primorac and our notoriously useless goalkeeping coach are an issue

A club is as good as the staff it has.....this is why we were left behind. This is why when Liverpool had Souness and the most crucial time in English football they were left behind while United has much better staff. I have said 100 times Wenger is by far the best person in our staff at his job compared to the best. Without him this club will barely be a midtable club

Aren't we still awaiting confirmation of the date Gary (Colin's cousin) returns to us?

But given that wengers the leader and involved in everything's so we hear, then surely it lessens the argument on him being so good at his job if he can't recruit and surround himself with good people ?

Arsenal to appoint Liverpool's former head of fitness as new director of high performance

Arsenal are making a significant move to strengthen their backroom staff with the expected appointment of Darren Burgess as a new director of high performance.

Burgess is close to agreeing a deal at the Emirates with the hiring of the Australian having already been rubber-stamped by Arsene Wenger after an approach by Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis. Burgess will report directly to Wenger.

Burgess is regarded as one of the most pre-eminent experts in fitness and conditioning in world sport and is expected to be put in overall charge of medical, fitness, psychology and performance analysis at Arsenal.

The Australian will oversee all areas, it seems, on the technical side of the club apart from scouting.

The appointment, which should be announced this week, would appear to be the key recruit that Arsenal have been talking about this summer after the club moved away from the idea – for now – of bringing in a director of football as was originally planned when Gazidis spoke about the need for change.

During the most turbulent part of Arsenal’s season - when they lost seven out of 12 games in all competitions between January 31 and April 10 – Gazidis claimed there was a “catalyst for change” this summer and fans expect a degree of change in part to justify the decision to award Wenger a new two-year contract despite finishing fifth in the Premier League.

However Wenger proved resistant to relinquishing control of the club’s transfer strategy and so the Arsenal altered the role. Wenger also does not want to make significant changes to his backroom staff – indeed he wants to retain them all – including goalkeeping coach Garry Payton and fitness coach Tony Colbert who had appeared under threat.

It remains to be seen what the appointment means for Colbert, but it is thought Burgess will work closely with Shad Forsythe, Arsenal’s head of athletic performance enhancement whose arrival was much-heralded in 2014 after his work with the German national team.

Burgess is currently working for the football club Port Adelaide in Australia – it is his second stint there – and there may well be a fight to keep him given he is on a fixed-term contract. However it seems highly unlikely that Arsenal would not be able to agree a compensation deal or Burgess could also help out Port Adelaide until the end of their season. Arsenal will surely want him to start work immediately to prepare for pre-season and the new campaign.

Burgess is one of the most pre-eminent fitness experts in the world and has previously worked for Liverpool for two years under Kenny Dalglish, Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers and also oversaw the fitness of the Australian football team, the Socceroos, during their World Cup campaign.
