Arsenal Under-23s head coach Freddie Ljungberg has revealed Unai Emery's personal intervention brought an end to Eddie Nketiah's planned loan move to the Bundesliga.
Nketiah had been set to join Augsburg for the remainder of the season, with Arsenal expecting the deal to go through in the final hours of deadline day.
It is understood that members of the Arsenal hierarchy were prepared to allow Nketiah to join Augsburg, where he was expected to get regular first-team football, having previously blocked interest from Championship clubs.
However the move fell apart following the personal intervention of Emery, who sees Nketiah as a valuable alternative to senior strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.
"There's a lot of rumours about what happens," Ljungberg told football.london. "What happens behind the scenes stays behind the scenes. If the club or Eddie wants to make a statement that's a different story.
"The main thing for Eddie is that he stayed because he's so important to Unai that he wants to keep him.
"He should see that as a pat on his own back that he's important to the club even if there were offers for him to go.
"That decision was up to Unai and the big bosses. It's nothing to do with us."
Nketiah was subsequently named among the substitutes for Arsenal's 3-1 defeat at Manchester City on Sunday, the 11th time this season he has been named on a Premier League bench.
