no point in selling them now....that window has passed and once the club didnt sell in the summer you would think they would have thought they couldnt attract great players so they stuck with what they have. Selling in January makes even less sense as we cant get anyone in

It doesn't make sense. Except it's Wenger and Arsenal: a combination of senselessness.

At this point though Wenger is screwed because every fan will criticise him if both players leave on a free at the end of the season and if we are going to sell them in January we may as well have sold them in the summer to get maximum return for them.

This is a problem of Wenger's making so, he deserves the heat he will get for it. For a man that specialises in Economics he has been a total dufus in this case

Agreed, unless they have a direct replacement set up (which they haven't, it would be a down grade) then they should just let them leave for free in summer and suck it up.

The plan I'm sure was to keep them to help us make CL so they can get either their top 4 trophy and or the £40m CL money.

Selling in January for £17m (guess) then missing out on the £40m from the CL is even worse.

Happy for Alexis to leave after he leads us to EL glory in May.

I knew the signings of Alexis and Ozil would shape our future one way or another. Either it was a statement of intent that we would indeed try to compete with United, City and Chelsea; or we would fail to convince the two - and by proxy other players of their ilk - and the 'new Arsenal' project would lose all credibility.

Looking back, it was horribly naive of me to have had a positive outlook on the future. Up until that point nothing had suggested the club would raise their footballing ambitions, and everything since then has suggested the exact opposite: that the club has no true interest in pushing on and competing with the elite clubs.

The Alexis and Ozil sagas illustrate a brutal reality: United, City and Chelsea are now beyond us - permanently.

True, off you go then, the club will still be here when you go, life will go on.

There will be a lot more pain before we find the oasis we are looking for

Ain't no oasis coming. Wenger will eventually leave but Kroenke will be here forever. Under a Poch or Jardim type manager we might continue to finish above Utd or Chelsea during their occasional off seasons.

But the PL title is beyond us when even Liverpool are happy to spend 68m on Keita along with 35m each for Salah, Mane and Firminho. We will be pertually stuck fighting them and Spurs for a CL place and keep dropping crucial points against mid table sides like Watford, Stoke and Southampton that are getting better each year.

"Manager Arsene Wenger says forward Alexis Sanchez and midfielder Mesut Ozil will be at Arsenal after the January transfer window "unless something unbelievable happens".

The contracts of both players expire at the end of the season.

Asked if his gut feeling is they will stay, Wenger replied: "Yes, of course."
