I think your assessment of the incident is a good reflection of what actually happened.

Only those people who have very limited experience of playing sports, might not be able to comprehend the thought process for someone to do what Vardy did whilst in the act of falling, and why they are inclined to view it as wholly unintentional.

That we can readily understand a computer calculating data to send it to the other side of the world in less than a second, some people struggle to appreciate the human brain is much quicker than that.
