You can.

When I was younger I did security for Nelson Mandela and he had armed bodyguards.

Fair enough they may of had diplomatic clearance or something but I'm sure if you present the police with authority they will give you a licence for the job if its deemed necessary and you have the background licences?

You can't.

Only the police, the army, and army contractors can carry weapons

Hmmm you can, I should know I was there as part of the security detail.

"With the approval of the UK government foreign state bodyguards may be armed but there may be restrictions on the weapons that they bring into the UK. Put simply Private bodyguards = nothing. State Bodyguards = armed with handguns/automatic weapons if approved"

There you go, Mandela's bodyguards were South African Foreign state.

Yes, as is clearly the case with the secret service etc

But I'm going to repeat myself here

You can not hire armed bodyguards in the UK

Could still hire secuirty guards / body guards from the UK.

Which seems the most rational option, that's what every other celebrity or VIP does when they're under threat.

Pretty sure the police would send armed officers for protection if you paid them.

Just get a serious tuning squad together quietly, seek and destroy, a severe lesson is needed.

Have the details of the ‘security incidents ‘ been released? Even any rumours?

My guess is it’s some prat making anonymous threats thinking it’s a funny thing to do.

If he gets caught he won’t be laughing.

Two men were arrested outside Özil’s home.

Ferhat Ercan, 27 and Salaman Ekinci, 27, were charged on Friday under Section 4a of the Public Order Act following the incident and are due to appear at Highbury Corner magistrates' court next month.

I don't understand how a club of our caliber can't arrange for police protection of the families and a police escort to the airport. I'd understand if the reasoning was that the players were left out due to the effect this is having on them psychologically, but it seems kind of odd that we're blaming it on security concerns.

State protection is more than likely only for diplomatic purposes or members of the state.if the police were to provide such a service it would be costly and at the expense of other crime not being worked through, hence the need for private security mostly ex military or peeps with history or background in the dark arts

True, however, you can't spend the rest of your life in hiding, life itself is a risk, sometimes you have to just take all the precautions, you can and get on with it,what's the alternative stay home?

They leave their house and people try and attack their families

Then what?

Sims you know I love you but this a horrible take on many levels.

1. Ozil isn't protecting shit
2. They don't have to leave their families at their house, they could go to a friend's place or relatives
3. No one is targeting Kola and Ozil's significant others
4.By that logic should they just never leave their house again?

So what's the protocol then for people and their families who are actively endangered due to say being a witness in a mob related trial, being stalked by someone, etc.?

Direct police protection in serious cases

I knew a guy, a colleague, who had a cop outside his house for months. He was a juror in a gangland case.

Then of course theres Salman Rushdie who had pretty much head of state level security for years

Yeah, that makes sense. So I guess our situation isn't serious enough? Seems kind of strange, the celebrity status of our higher paid footballer and the fact that he's being threatened should warrant this kind of protection at least temporarily, in my opinion.

Anyway, I really don't see how staying home (unless they and their families are literally staying in the house 24/7) is better security wise, and what will change so they'll be allowed "out" again? If they're being targeted by specific individuals then it won't blow over anytime soon, unless those two guys they caught were the only perps. Weird situation, would be great if the club clarified these matters further with time.
