I think he wants two players for every position and ESR is seen as LWF with Martinelli. That would explain signing Vieira to be CAM with Odegaard.theHotHead wrote:We have to be realistic, if as you say Arteta is looking for a playmaker on the left, he made Odegaard captain so he won't be making way for anyone and you can't play Odegaard, ESR and Vieira. In reality we have 3 players for 1 spot because Partey + 1 other CM (not an AM) will most likely be Arteta's preference

The vibe that I'm getting from Arteta is that with Vieira, he's wanting a playmaker type from the left with that Ozil-esque level of pass, vision and instinctive one touch play in and around the penalty area similar to what Odegaard provides from the right.
I don't quite see that as any real block or hindrance to Smith-Rowe, given I'm all but certain the manager can see the running, space appreciation and good movement within his game that can be further developed in releasing its full potential, and his more natural playing style that is not too dissimilar to that of a young Steven Gerrard minus the intensity, and as such him making strong runs through the middle with or without the ball is the direction I believe Arteta is sign posting for him as opposed to permanent residence on the left flank.

Hopefully, because that at least means we won't see Xhaka starting every game. But if ESR isn't being considered for that role, it just means he's battling with Martinelli for that left flank spot. Competition for places is good but I'm not so sure about two players of a similar age battling for regular game time.

Odegaard looking to gel with Jesus
New skipper Martin Odegaard believes that it is vital that he and Gabriel Jesus continue to improve their understanding on the pitch to ensure we enjoy a successful campaign.
The Norwegian playmaker revealed his short-term aim in his first captain's notes for the official programme ahead of this weekend's game against Leicester City, as the ever-popular feature is back by popular demand to shed light on the views inside our dressing room.
And Odegaard didn't disappoint, highlighting his quest for perfection by suggesting he's still annoyed with himself for spurning the opportunity for a shot when played in by Jesus against Crystal Palace last week, and indicating his keenness to develop a fruitful partnership with the Brazilian striker.
He wrote: "All the new players have settled well so far, and I know that it’s important that I build a good understanding with Gabriel Jesus early as well. Against Palace we didn’t have too many combinations, but he did play me in for the chance in the second half. I should have taken a shot, and that would have been a great start for us together.
"But I think our combination play was really good in pre-season and we have a great connection in training too. I enjoy so much playing with him, so hopefully we can see more of that in the next games.
"For my chance against Palace, I was thinking to take a touch a bit more to the left, and then I took it to the right instead and I felt the player was more in front of me than he actually was. When I saw the clip back I wasn’t happy with it, but you have to learn from it, always improve and hopefully next time I will take the shot and score. I know it was the wrong decision of course.
"The important thing is that we got the win, and we want to carry on our run."
