Why was the jump from Wenger's last season to Emery so huge?

Because the person that made the chart is a moron. Wenger was still here in 17/18.

That big jump would be the estimated cost of Wenger and Gazidis' final rodeo: signing Laca + Mhikytaryan + Auba + Ozil on huge contracts.

I doubt the numbers are correct anyway. Whatever we saved on Ozil's wages went straight to Willian and Partey's chequebooks.

The numbers are likely wrong. We are paying Auba £7m to play for Barca, and we paid Ozil to play for Fener as well. Those have been neatly subtracted.

LOOOL

Oh well .... big wage bill and shit football it still is then.

The numbers aren't correct. It's a false graphic.

Plus, with the rumors that Arsenal are going big with Saka's new contract, and with new recruitments (CM and ST) in the summer, the wage bill will only go up. Let's not forget that as soon as we give Saka a whopping contract, ESR and Martinelli would be next in line for a pay-rise.

Unless Arsenal aspires to remain a top-8 club, high wage bills have become inevitable whether a club targets UCL or UEL as successful benchmarks.

It won't be long before we hear a change of tone from Edu and Arteta, with numerous articles on the Athletic about this thing.

Sure, but we now have the room to do it. Lowering wages is not a positive in and of itself... if that was the goal then its a negative.
I would MUCH rather we be spending the money securing our talented younger players to long contracts than blowing our wage bill on ageing stars.

None of them should be offered a penny over £120k pw, if we want to learn from our past mistakes.

We are not like Chelsea; they always manage to move out underperformers on big wages. We OTOH seem to be stuck with them until their contract runs out or we create a public spectacle while figuring out how to pay them off.

Pay rise is a must, but not that high, please. £100k is already too much for a youth player from our own academy. They will get more money later, not now.
For comparison Foden earns £100k, Mount earns £88k and Bellingham earns even less, only around £50k.

Both flourished under Arteta, who will be getting manager of the season if we finish top 4.

Manager of the season? Doubt it. Though Saka and Smith Rowe should get players of the season for carrying him. Nice try though troll.
