Arsenal cult hero Emmanuel Eboue training with Sunderland

Club have option to sign the 32-year-old, who has been without a club since the summer

The much-loved former Arsenal right-back Emmanuel Eboue is training with Sunderland.

The 32-year-old has been without a club since the summer, when his contract with Turkish club Galatasaray expired.

Eboue last played a competitive match in May and is now training with Sunderland as he looks to find a new club.

The right-back is understood to only be training with Sam Allardyce's men to keep fit, but they have the option to sign the Ivorian despite the transfer window closing.

Sunderland have two spaces in their 25-man Premier League squad and Eboue would offer an option in the right-back position that the club have been struggling in, with Billy Jones and DeAndre Yedlin the current options.

Eboue became a cult hero at Arsenal, whose fans used to sing to opposition supporters "you've only come to see Eboue", and he made 214 appearances between 2005 and 2011.

There were even suggestions that Eboue might be returning to the Emirates, with the player publically expressing his desire for a return last month.

"We are looking for options," Eboue told The Sun, "but I'd love to come back to Arsenal."

Unsurprisingly Arsene Wenger resisted the temptation to resign the defender - partly because he already had Hector Bellerin and Calum Chambers to play at right-back, and partly because he's not a complete half-wit.

Eboue first burst onto the scene at Arsenal by playing superbly in the run to the 2006 Champions League final, where he made the right-back position his own.

The arrival of Bacary Sagna in 2007 allowed Eboue to enjoy a spell further forward in midfield, but soon after he became more of a utility player for Wenger, never fully able to hold down one position.

Fans briefly turned on Eboue during a dreadful performance in a home match against Wigan in December 2008 that saw him substituted to a cacophony of boos after coming on as a substitute earlier in the match himself.

The defender's relationship with the Arsenal supporters quickly recovered though and just three months later Eboue was doing this celebration after scoring against Blackburn in a 4-0 home win.

Eboue then gained notoriety at the 2010 World Cup for Ivory Coast when attempting to listen in to the North Korea manager giving instructions to one of his players.

The 2010-11 season would prove to be Eboue's last stand at Arsenal, as Wenger's patience finally snapped when the Ivorian gave away a completely needless penalty against Liverpool that denied Arsenal a much-needed win.

Four years in Turkey followed, but now Eboue is back, and potentially coming to a Premier League ground near you.

Get him in on a six-month contract for the banter.

I remember him diving in Galatasaray's penalty box and giving away goal in at least 2 occasion, one of them against Fenerbahçe at away. Just clear the ball you f**king idiot. Still hate him for that.
