What we should be doing is offering new contracts every year with a small pay rise to our most valued players. Offers like that are more attractive.

Example #1

Player has three years left on his contract and is on £50k per week. Club offers him new four year contract of £70k per week. Overall additional salary to the player for the next three years = £3,120,000.00.

Example #2

Player has one year left on his contract and is on £50k per week. Club offers him new four year contract of £70k per week. Overall additional salary to the player for the next year = £1,040,000.00

It would be madness for the player to refuse the pay rise in example #1. He has three years left, and could earn the additional £3.12m.

But with example #2, it could be much more easily refused - with the justification that leaving on a Bosman free in 12 months would reap much greater rewards.

Tottenham have given Harry Kane an improved contract every year for the past four years - each with a five year contract.

We'd still be in the scenario we are now with Ramsey having 1 year left.

I agree with the Meh, the day of me fretting over players leaving is over.

Arsenal is back, its about time we started acting accordingly.

Lets be honest one of the main reasons we used to have a breakdown if a decent player left us is because we knew damn well that he wouldn't be replaced.

We sold RVP and got Giroud, we sold Fabregas and Nasri and got in Yossi Benayoun and Arteta ffs.

But now I'm no longer worried, if Ramsey was to go we'd replace him and properly, I can see that now.

For me, the only relevant question when dealing with a player angling for a renewal: does he deserve what he's asking?

Let's apply that line of thought on Ramsey. He's been on £100,000 or so per week since the start of the 2014-15 season. Have his performances improved since then? I can't say they have. Does he, then, deserve a hefty rise? Probably not. Thus, we shouldn't offer him a significant raise.

If Ramsey won't extend his contract then I'm fine with selling him. We can't let any player hold us ransom, let alone Aaron Ramsey.

He is not just replaceable. We could upgrade our team buy replacing him. He has never been among the best players of his position, not even close.

Sounds like we do need money if our budget was only 70m tbh

Liverpool just spent that on a goalkeeper

Welbz £12m
Campbell £4m
Jenkinson £3m
Ospina £3m
Akpom £1m

If we can sell most/all, it'd yield £20-25m, easily.

Edit: how many more homegrown players can we afford to sell without having to bring in replacement(s)?

Don't think so.

And even he was the best one, how 'best' could the best one be considering his team was just the 6th in the table, 37 points behind the champion, 7 points behind the 5th and only won half of 38 games.

Had no idea he signed for STVV.

I'm surprised they're able to fork out this amount of money on a single player.

Has to be their transfer record.

He played well as they all do ........ approaching contract time.

How many years has it been since his last purple patch?

I'm not saying I don't want him, I'm saying if he wants to go Mkhitarayn is a proper no10 or we could just buy another CM.

It wouldn't be the end of the world.
