Why on the bench?

Because he isn't good enough to start.

So impact sub? I doubt that highly. He's better than that.

Is he though? The jury is still out on him. I've said before, is he better than Bendtner through the middle? So far he only seems to be able to score with his head, which is something we're no good at setting up. I'm not sure why we signed him when we had Bendtner and Chamakh, we needed to sign a technical striker rather than another target man.

 How long have we been crying out for a target man as a 'plan B'?

We do need another, more technical, striker that suits our style. But I'm still all for having someone like Giroud.

We were to some extent but only as a plan B and from what I've seen so far, I wouldn't say Giroud is any better than Bendtner is playing through the middle. As I said, the jury is still out but at the moment, it seems like we've brought in a cheaper alternative to what we needed and are going to have to spend more now to try and get what we should have got in the first place.

For another team maybe, but not Arsenal.

We should be aiming higher, the fact that many are accepting the best we can do is Giroud speaks volumes. :lipssealed:

Giroud would be great alongside another player. His link up play is top notch plus his presence on the pitch & work rate is outstanding. Not got a bad shot either.

He isn't going to play alongside another player though. So he isn't good enough.

As a rotation option he is a good option, as a regular starter we need better.

If a new manager came in tomorrow, played giroud and podolski up front and cazorla on the left in a 4-4-2 then we and Giroud be transformed overnight!

Agreed PG.

Giroud would shine playing alongside a more technical striker like Podolski. On the flip side it would also allow bring the best out of Podolski as he is currently being criminally wasted on the LHS. Cazorla would add the much needed bite/penetration on the left wing. Not saying Cazorla cannot play as a CAM but imo his best attributes will come through when he is on the flanks imo. With Rosicky's return we can afford to shift Cazorla to the Left wing.

Agreed. This 433 experiment was worth a go but hasn't worked. 442 is the way we should go forward.

The first 13 minutes of this years Spurs game shows how effective 442 can be.

Arsenal’s Gervinho to be coddled after Africa Cup

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he will not rush Gervinho back to action after his African Cup of Nations duties.

The speedy attacker will head off to south Africa with the Ivory Coast team for the 2013 tournament which kicks off on January 19 and concludes on February 10.

Gervinho may link up with the Ivorians as early as January 5 meaning he may miss around a month of club football and Wenger wants to ensure he does not burn out.

"The Africa Cup of Nations starts on January 19, and usually the players have to be there 14 days before - that means we could lose Gervinho on January 5," Wenger told the club's official website.

"Usually it's always a battle to get him to play in the FA Cup third round. When they come back, the players have played a massive competition.

"Last year, we never [got] him back completely because he came back with a disappointing result and we didn't give him any rest.

"Maybe we have to do it a little bit differently when he comes back [in 2013]."

With Arshavin out of favor with Wenger, Ox struggling to regain his last season form and Wenger thinking of easing back Gervinho after ACON, we may need to sign a winger.
