Time for Gibbs to push for Gael's position?

Good thing AW is manager then.

Clichy is a much better LB and has been at the top level for years, and is still just a kid himself.

Gibbs originally started as a LW and is excelent there, why not groom Gibbs as a potential replacement for Arshavin?

Think about it, rape worthy pace and power, Clichys trickery, Gibbs shooting and crossing as well as both of there defensive ability...

Anyway, i get the impression quite a few Gooners would happily drop Clichy and hang him out to dry, with no mention of the fact that he is easily our most passionate and loyal player, he bleeds Arsenal.

Nah GG, Eden Hazard is Arshavin's successor.

Playing both Gibbs and Clichy would be a good strategy when we got our backs to the walls or are playing a team better than ourselves, like mentioned earlier in the thread, having 4 full backs on the field, with Eboue in front of Sagna as well, but in normal games I see Gibbs very much as a left back.

I think he Can push him all the way.. At least be a more of a Eboue-Sagna thing.. He is good enough.. Was unlucky with injury last season.. Or he would have played a few games specially when Gael was injured and we had Traore playing..

I think its time to give gibbs some starts in the first 11. clichy still can't cross. that's a shame. clichy also messed up the euro-game for france against hleb and co. poor defending by him.

Sorry but all this stuff about Clichy not being able to cross is just nonsense....

His cross for Gallas' goal was absolute perfection.

That video shows some good crosses he made last season too, as well as that it shows why he is starting ahead of Gibbs.

Time for Gibbs to push for Gael's position?

I'm sure the idea of cashing in on Gael has crossed Wenger's mind! Profit, profit, profit, that's the name of the game!

I'd love to see Gibbs and Clichy form a partnership in the mould of Sagna-Eboue. Would be a huge shame to see the back of Clichy, I keep forgeting he's only 25!

Let's get physical:

Almunia
Sagna Squillaci Vermaelen Clichy
Eboue Fabregas Song Gibbs
Chamakh Bendtner

(providing RVP and Arshavin are injured)

Clichy isn't the best crosser, but why is everyone assuming that Gibbs is a better crosser?
Not much better from what I've seen. In fact he usually just cuts inside and passes to someone along the ground.

Cutting inside and passing along the ground is the better option, its what Arshavin and Eboue do.

The only two people who are decent at crossing from the wings are Rosicky and Nasri

Not when you have Chamakh in the box, and not when the sideways passing has got us nowhere for 70 minutes.

Time for Gibbs to push for Gael's position?

Postby Arsenal Tone » Thu Sep 30, 2010 1:27 pm

gzagee wrote:Call it madness, call it wishful thinking, call absolute heresy but, is there a chance for Kieran Gibbs to really push Clichy hard for his LB spot?

I know, I know.. drop Gael and we play right into the hands of the Barcas and Inters of this world but, who has a god-given right to his position? Such attitude would breed complacency. And no, I'm not for a moment suggesting Gael has been resting on his laurels.

But hear me out:

With Gibbs set to feature regularly in future England squads and his maturity coming on leaps and bounds do you think it's nearing time for Wenger to think about giving him a start especially if Clichy follows on with some of last season's inconsistent performances?

We are in a privileged position to have two class int'l LBs in our ranks, but my thinking is that should Gael not pull out some stellar performances then maybe Gibbs can give him the kick up the backside he needs.

I know Gael's season was blighted by injury but I think that by now he really should be pushing Cashley and Evra regularly for the top award as best EPL LB.

What say you?

Can a mod please merge this with my other thread on the same subject please!

Edit: whoops this thread was here first!
