Comparison to invincibles

Postby Arsenal Tone » Sun Aug 15, 2010 11:48 am

THE INVINCIBLES ARE THE BENCHMARK FOR ALL FUTURE ARSENAL SQUADS, FORGIVE FUTURE BUMPS OF THIS THREAD!

In the invincible season we used 22 players in the Premier League. If you compare to our current squad, whilst there may seem a big gap in quality, in terms of numbers we have a replacement for each one.

Lehmann - Fabianski/Almunia
Lauren - Sagna
Campbell - Vermaelen
Toure - Koscielny
Cole - Clichy
Ljungberg - Nasri
Gilberto - Song
Vieira - Fabregas
Pires - Arshavin
Henry - Chamakh
Bergkamp – Van Persie

Keown - Djourou
Cygan – Denilson
Parlour - Eboue
Edu - Diaby
Reyes - Walcott
Kanu - Bendtner
Wiltord - Rosicky

Clichy - Gibbs/Traore
Aliadiere - Vela
Bentley - Wilshere/Ramsey
Hoyte - Frimpong

Sorry PG but I can't see the merits of this discussion.
We all know this squad, indeed since 2006/07 doesn't match up to the Invincibles.
I haven't even heard Arsene refer to this crop as anything approaching that.

So why draw this thing out when there's no issue to discuss.

Or maybe I'm missing something... :dontknow:

Sorry, I was trying to be positive for a change. Just saying that with a bit more luck with injuries, numbers wise we aren't that short of players. The invincible squad should be the benchmark for measuring all of our squads and going into the new season today I thought it was appropriate to see how our current squad measures up?

So the point your making is that we have 22 or more players in the squad?

Yeah, sorry, crap thread. I just thought we could do with a thread that wasn't about making signings and looked at what we have rather than what we should/could have.

Looking at the first post and comparing the players, whilst there is a gap in quality, it isn't as big as I thought it would be. When you think about squad players like Cygan being involved it makes you wonder if Denilson really is as bad a squad player as we think!

I can see what you mean though, our squad aint that bad. We just dont have the Bergkamp Herny, Pires, Keown, Vieira players sadly.

Compare us to other premier league squads and we'd look stronger

Ok PG, lets spin it a bit.

If Henry, Bergkamp, Vieira and Pires were injured for a large part of the season and then Gilberto, Campbell and Toure missed the end, would we have won the season as invincibles?

In fact, would we have won the season at all?

Take Lauren and Vieira out of the Invincibles team, replace them with Eboue and Fabregas, and you've got the Arsenal team that came closest to finishing outside the Top 4 in Wenger's reign.

So it could be argued that the 2006 team of Lehmann, Eboue, Cole, Campbell, Toure, Ljungberg, Gilberto, Fabregas, Pires, Bergkamp and Henry was the worst team Arsenal of the Wenger years.......

Although I like most of our players now, they are nothing on the invincibles. Hear a saying the other day that brought memories of how good they were flooding back. 'If you wanted to fight them, they would fight you. If you wanted to play them, they would blow you away'. Our new squad can't fight to well and they hit brick walls sometimes when they try and play

The Invincibles played better football than this team. Awesome counter attacking, pace, power, searching through balls for forwards to run onto. This current tip-tap doesn't compare

They were more like Man United's style is now than the current tactics. Strong at the back then fast and lethal on the counter.
