Without CL our transfers will look a lot like last year's. No real quality, just a bunch of bets for the future that we will overpay for.

Tielemans will probably be the best of the lot, and frankly, he's had a terrible season. How he will adjust to our plodding, defensive football is another question.

Absolutely devastated right now. Had such high hopes of a top 4 finish and having CL football to draw top tier talent.

I sure hope Arsenal can still lure a top striker and strengthen the midfield. I like Partey but ffs where is he when we needed him the most? Need that dude fit to play in those matches against Spurs and Newcastle. Not sitting in street clothes.

He’s been a major disappointment imo.

We need some tough guys. The youth can only get you so far. Need some crafty veteran players mixed in.

Best transfer would be a quality manager.

Arsenal, who have been linked with 25-year-old Manchester City and Brazil forward Gabriel Jesus, will prioritise signing a striker in the summer when they will invest heavily in their squad even if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. (Telegraph - subscription required)

Last season we saw £150m worth of action

And we didn't get what we needed

Yes we did.
Not everything, but that was not going to happen in one window.
The evidence of the season, finishing 5th, shows the progression to a good season and that the signings worked out well .
We continue the rebuild this summer.

Last season Arteta spent 150m - not just the most in the EPL, but the most by any manager in Europe - and we finished fifth going out of all the cups early doors - you really want to give him another 150m? Why?

There was ZERO progression - we finished just as far behind the EPL champions and once again behind Spurs, that's with no European football - the fact Utd were shit, West Ham fell apart with to many games, and Leicester had a weak EPL season, entirely due to them both reaching a European semi-final - is the only reason we weren't eighth again - ZERO improvement just a very weak 4-8th in the EPL.

We blew our best chance for European football in years - progression my arse.

I'm perfectly fine investing another 150m into the squad as long as they are younger, talented players that can continue to build on the foundation we've set so far. Worst case scenario, Arteta's replacement will have a large group of prospects to build around. To me, investing in the squad is about preserving and improving the quality of the club, not just Arteta's project.

Do you truly believe that Arteta deserves another £150m? What would he do with it that he couldn't with £225m he's already spent?

Xhaka is out there saying that the players aren't turning up. The vast majority of these are players Arteta brought to the club.

Aren't we just throwing good money after bad?

I have no problem with spending 150m - I would like a couple of proven experienced players, not just more kids - my concern is that the manager isn't capable of selecting or attracting the calibre we need ..... do you want to play for Pep, Klopp, Tuchel, Conte in the CL or for Arteta in the EL. Its moot because we are where we are, but another 150m on the bang average we've already spent 225m since Arteta's been here? its a worry.

Like it or not Arsenal will spend decent amount in summer on key recruitments. That's the reason why they kept quiet in January. They targeted a striker which they failed so they kept their powder dry. It was a limited risk gamble which has largely paid of. We've achieved 5th , which was what the mgmt targeted w/ the young squad we assembled. No sensible organization sets outlandish goals like winning big prizes in an year or two. It is step at a time, and there will be setbacks, everyone understands, but hopes those will be minor. Same has happened here. Probably the ultimate target was 4th but that was the best case scenario, which doesn't happen always so settled for the next best target. Not the end of the world by any means.
Now , the goal will be consolidation and continuous improvement.
So spend strategically and look up.
Probably the reason why Arteta & Co received new contacts as soon as EL was achieved. Upper management had already set those goals taking everything into account.

It's obviously more nuanced than you're framing it. Many of the signings last summer were good investments. Tomiyasu, Ramsdale, and Odegaard will be starters for the next few years. White, when healthy, is a very good defender although I think everyone can admit 50m was an overpay. Lokonga and Tavares aren't ready yet, clearly, but they've both shown flashes of potential that could indicate the best is yet to come.

It's clear the players that aren't showing up are the ones with one foot out the door already. Arsenal finished the Newcastle game with Lacazette, Elneny, Nketiah, Pepe, and Cedric on the pitch, all of whom are unlikely to be here next season. That's unacceptable in a must win game IMO and that blame largely falls on the club for not strengthening in January.

If that 150m is used for quality depth and a star striker, it will be easier to move on from Arteta and find a chef that can make a meal from these ingredients.

Fair enough. I don't think we will get an established top-class player though, manager doesn't have the pull.
