It's obviously more nuanced than you're framing it. Many of the signings last summer were good investments. Tomiyasu, Ramsdale, and Odegaard will be starters for the next few years. White, when healthy, is a very good defender although I think everyone can admit 50m was an overpay. Lokonga and Tavares aren't ready yet, clearly, but they've both shown flashes of potential that could indicate the best is yet to come.

It's clear the players that aren't showing up are the ones with one foot out the door already. Arsenal finished the Newcastle game with Lacazette, Elneny, Nketiah, Pepe, and Cedric on the pitch, all of whom are unlikely to be here next season. That's unacceptable in a must win game IMO and that blame largely falls on the club for not strengthening in January.

If that 150m is used for quality depth and a star striker, it will be easier to move on from Arteta and find a chef that can make a meal from these ingredients.

Fair enough. I don't think we will get an established top-class player though, manager doesn't have the pull.

Depends on what you consider top-class? Jesus was good enough for City, who win things. Is he top class?
Invincibility lies in the defence; the possibility of victory in the attack.

Edu talked about 1-2 players in his recent interview (sounds just like Wenger l as he use to say the same).

So perhaps we shouldn’t expect a host of signings.

Jesus is a City backup who Guardiola has never really trusted, so much so that they’ve relied on goals from the likes of Mahrez and De Bruyne.

He’s not the kind of player that will help us close the gap on the top teams, as a backup he’s fine but not as first choice.

I agree, also think we’ve lost some of our shine as well, it’s been a long time since we’ve competed and been in the CL.

Think players now see us as a club that doesn’t win, so they’ll only come for the money, but if they’re in demand and any decent club wants them they won’t choose us.

Definite Returners
GK - Ramsdale, (Turner)
DF - Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney, Saliba, Tavares, Holding, (Trusty)
MD - Partey, Xhaka, Odegaard, Lokonga
FW - Saka, Martinelli, Smith Rowe, Nelson, Balogun

Likely Departures
GK - Leno
DF - Bellerin, Cedric, Mari
MD - Elneny, Maitland-Niles
FW - Lacazette, Nketiah, Pepe

Turner is a perfectly fine #2 GK so no need to backfill Leno if sold. Definitely need to sign fullback cover, especially if Tavares is loaned out. Midfield depth is atrocious so IMO we need 2 signings there, plus backfilling anyone sold/loaned from midfield. The forwards are stocked with wingers and obviously there's a massive hole at CF.

We have to sign at least 5 new players IMO: fullback like Hickey, two midfielders preferably 8s, and two 9s with one elite striker.

Recovering some funds through sales of Leno, Bellerin, Cedric, Mari, AMN, and Pepe is an absolute must. Edu will get 10m total, at most.

Turner is an unknown like Runarrson. We definitely need a more experienced backup to Ramsdale.

Hopefully they will be world class, to close the gap to city or liverpool we will probably need 7 good signings though

2 different type of players though, Sterling is a wide forward, Jesus will lead the line.

When you say definite returners, is that based on how you rate them or how you think Arteta rates them ?!

If its how you rate them there are quite a few suspect names in there, Xhaka to name the most obvious. Tavares and Holding, why would they be definites ? If we want the top trophies Holding needs to go and I am not convinced Tavares has it, top 4 quali, yeah, why not, squad members. Same for Lokonga, not sure he has it, most certainly wouldn't be a definite returner in my book. Nelson and Balogun I am even more confident are not good enough so absolutely not definite returners.

Makes you wonder why we got rid of players that were better than some of the players we kept.

Managing is about managing people too, not just setting systems and formations. You cannot be a good manager if you are shit with people!
