Jay knows this but is trying to get extra mileage to his argument by being a pleb.

Lol, so it's down to the manager as long as his players are good enough. ;)
You are getting there finally - it's why the vast majority of any success comes from the players.
If all the teams were equal in playing personal that is when managers come to the fore.

Jay we have been saying this for the longest time. At the top of the game with the best teams there isn't a big difference between the players, thats where a good manager steps up and makes the difference and takes the team forward. Thats always been the argument, thats why its not on the players, its always on the manager, good or bad, I have not changed my stance on this for years. Thats why I refer to "shit Wenger", the players were not shit - he was !

If you ever wanted proof of this you only have to look at Wenger. For how many years did the pundits forecast us dropping out of the top 4 after selling our best players, but year after year Wenger seemingly worked his magic and made a somewhat ordinary Arsenal team qualify for the CL.

He got performances out of the squad that at times we had no right to get. That was 100% down to the manager and had nothing to do with the players that were clearly punching way above their weight.

Well then we are saying the same thing - the team with the best players will finish higher regardless of the manager because the key ingredient is always the players. Yes, if teams are closely matched many things can have an influence, including the manager. But this discussion started a long time ago with claims that managers like Ancelotti could work miracles and make us challengers last year. That was poppycock.

But we proved it, because you can see the same or worse players under Wenger did better than under Emery. Arteta came in and the same players did better under Arteta. The next season even better players did worse under Arteta then went on a run of form a polar opposite to what had come before.

It has NEVER been down to the players, you cannot say 90% of the squad downed tools. We have heard pundits say time and time again that it is nonsense for people to say players don't try hard, we heard it again recently with Carragher and Neville defending players at Man U.

One or 2 players may not give their all at times but for us to be as bad as we have been its squarely down to the manager, not the players.

They were after the 2nd goal.

Capitulation.

Obviously we needed the offence to help relieve the pressure but our defending was decent in the first half but second half was attrocious.

The defence man for man weren't bad at all that's the disappointing thing, Gabriel and Tavares handled Salah very well for the majority it was just silly mistakes at times that killed is, the defence seemed to have very little protection from those in front as well and the midfield/strikers weren't keeping the ball for long enough periods to relieve the pressure.

Yes, our midfielders were having a bad day. Plus Tavarez' mistake effected the team in a very bad way.

You can thank Ramsdale for that, at least two good saves.

Defense looks mostly ok, but little worried about Party's game. So far haven't justified his pay rate. Even against Newcastle his passes looked laboured at times and had quite a few misplaced ones.
