I have lost substantial enthusiasm and interest due to the transfer window. Utter shit show. Edu told us to be very excited. For what? A defender, holding midfielder and Raheem f***ing Sterling on loan?

ESR is an offensive midfielder, I get the feeling Merino is more box to box so I don't think he will contribute much to our offense. So I can't say with any confidence that Merino improves it.

I don't think you can look at it like that in a team sport.
Merino may well give more freedom to Odegaard, for example, by doing a lot of the leg work.
We just don't know yet.
He's also strong on moving the ball forward as well as defensively.

There is no point trying to justify our failure to buy an attacker this summer. The facts were laid bear when we signed Sterling on deadline day. A mediocre, short term compromise when what we needed was a long term, world class solution. If Edu cant do better than Merino, Califiori and two loans, he needs to be sent packing.

It's clear at this point that Edu doesn't do any scouting, he gets a list from Arteta's team and tries to sign them, funds permitting.

That explains why there was no movement on a striker after Sesko signed a new deal very early in the window --- Arteta didn't want anybody else, even though Eddie was being shifted. Same situation with Viera and ESR - no replacement signed, no cover for Odegaard or at the LCM position. A responsible DoF wouldn't allow this, especially as there will be more games tl play this season, assuming we don't drop out of the cups straight away.

Why would Edu do any scouting? Surely he relies on his team of scouts. I know Arsenal have scouts, my scouts for Arsenal in the Emirates.

We got on to the topic of Sterling, I told her initially I wasn't best pleased but was coming around, she looked at me like I was bonkers and said "he is a fantastic signing, Im ecstatic that we got him, he takes us to the next level"

Am I, I don’t recall saying as much, what I said is that he’s relatively unproven and that he’d played in the Championship a year ago.

But you make a good point TL and yourself have been waxing lyrical about him and yet there was no interest in him either.

Ok, the Technical Director doesn't personally do scouting, but he is still responsible for the overall state of recruitment. Why are we short 2 LCMs (Xhaka/ESR), 1 CF and 1 RC. (Viera), yet have 5 LBs on the wage bill?

Recruitment has improved but we are still short in key areas that everyone but Edu/Arteta can see

IMO, we were sailing close to the wind with PSR so we had to tighten our belts knowing the possible implications now.

We have spent huge amounts since Arteta arrived and our sales have been very poor by in large, we also spent loads at time we had no European football (no CL) and were not good in cups either whilst also handing out big contracts to existing/new players.

Our losses every year are indicative of all that, you don’t make losses unless you’re poorly run, struggling or spending more than you bring in.
