That should tell you all you need to know, may not be the best on that list, love him or hate him but he’s always been one of the first choices under 4 different managers we’ve had here.

Mr consistent leader, good fitness record and a big game player, I can see him being here until his mid 30s, ideally we need a rotation option like Tielemans though.

I really hope he's a squad player this year and not an automatic starter.

He still has the most balls out of probably all our plauers and manager however we all know despite his clear leadership qualities within the group there will be at least 3-5 we lose or disappoint to a Xhaka 'moment'.

Not to mention even at his best he cannot play the number 8 role in a possesion based side. Zinchenko can do this much better.

Its like we dont recognize still, Xhaka at our club simply hasant worked out like we planned.

What scares me is why we cant just buy another midfielder with balls to fit his role in the team.

3 years this guy has wanted out but hes still here. If we are to achieve our minimum target of at LEADT top 4 Xhaka cannot be a starter.

In the history of the club, there can't be many players who've been so consistently disappointing and played so many matches. 188 appearances.

Compare that with one of the best DMs the club has had, Gilberto. 170 appearances

More first team appearances than Gilberto fkin Silva

Think about that.

Besides 4 managers ,including Freddy, trusted him. Odd, what they all find irresistible in him.

I put it down to poor judgement and its not difficult to see why.

Wenger - absolutely past it and made a plethora of stupid/bad decisions.

Emery - thought Torreira could play as an attacking midfielder.

Freddie - useless caretaker manager

Arteta - stupid decisions and can't see talent when it bitch slaps him in his face.

Xhaka is a manager's dream, he is ride or die. He backs the manager without a second thought, whoever he is. Emery praised Xhaka's loyalty in an interview after getting sacked.

Its no surprise that Arteta's first move was to coax him into staying. Under any other manager, 16th place would mean the sack, but I have no doubt that back in Dec 2020 Xhaka was the one in the dressing room encouraging players to keep the faith. That loyalty has been rewarded with a contract extension that keeps him here till age 33.

Hard to imagine an impulsive, short tempered guy like him as an organizer in the dressing room.

He’s selected because he can play out of the back. Before him we had a double pivot of Cazorla and Arteta and it worked fine. Neither were genuine ball winners but their acumen and technical skills made them effective at transitioning us from defense to attack. We got Xhaka to serve as a successor to Arteta. To be the last man in the midfield shielding the back four and playing forward balls. Like a modern day Pirlo or Xabi Alonso. But Xhaka lacks the positioning ability of those greats or even Arteta for that matter. So we started pairing him up with other midfielders. And it never worked. Unfortunately we’ve just not found that deep lying midfielder who can shield the defense while play forward balls. Meanwhile City and Liverpool have found players like Fernandinho, gundogan and Fabinho and have prospered as a result.

Xhaka is still in our starting 11 is the only downside to start the new season.

I would rather play Holding as DM and Partey the CM.

Now that he's no longer being mistakenly played as a defensive midfielder as opposed to a deep playmaker operating next to one, we should finally get to see him if not exactly flourish as such, but be readily able to demonstrate his more natural game which is centred around his passing ability and vision coupled with his dogged physicality.
