That was another interview.

After the second leg, when asked what he regretted, he talked about Xhaka not being available. Not as a CM but as a make-shift LB.

Telling that Luiz himself doesn't want to stay. The Athletic also reported that Willian and Xhaka would prefer to leave amongst others.

Revealing in a lot of ways.
Arteta probably told them a few home truths tbf

Considering how Arteta asked Xhaka to stay when he was ready to leave, and Willian being one of Arteta's signings...

Arteta also said that we missed Xhaka at LB against Villarreal.

Your guess is as good as mine. ;)

He said Xhaka was needed at LB to relay instructions to Martinelli when going forward or tracking back. I can actually understand that. Arteta's unwieldy system worked best when we had drinks breaks so he could repeat those instructions. Xhaka is basically a shadow team captain, and 'gets' what Arteta wants more than the younger players.

Anyway, Xhaka got injured, Martinelli didn't start, and Arteta put Pepe there, despite him being totally ineffective on the left.

Be glad Xhaka got injured, we would've been mauled !!

Has been an absolutely disastrous signing.

The only CB we have who put on top class displays the only CB we have who is a leader, the only CB we have who can actually play out from the back properly.

I doubt it, those 3 are amongst his favourites, Xhaka pretty much plays every game.

Never rated Luiz, great passer but his defending left a lot to be desired.

Prone to bad errors throughout his career, never forget that game in the semi final of the World Cup against Germany when Brazil got hammered and he looked utterly clueless, was captain that day as well.

Thought he would have been better in midfield where his passing would be great and his errors wouldn’t be so costly.

Such a shame but I don’t blame him for leaving he’s a winner, can’t be playing under a manager like Arteta.

Our best centre back will be missed, the only leader we have and when he’s on it he’s world class.

Exactly to replace Luiz with a younger upgrade will cost 50M+ in today’s market, money we don’t really have which we could use elsewhere

Might become a better defender but he doesn’t have Luiz passing ability, nor do we know if he can become a leader either

Teirney will lead.
And with Leno wanting out it's a good opportunity to invest in a keeper that actually communicates to his defenders which is a huge +

It’s funny because Emi was exactly that goalkeeper, to think we developed him for 8 years only to sell him for peanuts once he reached top level
