Whilst I rate Metallica as music writers, I can't bring myself to listen to their music. Always felt they have the tendency to butcher their own compositions.

Oh man, you've reminded me of Scala & Kolacny Brothers' cover⁠—a hauntingly beautiful rendition of the song. And speaking of instrumental covers of Metallica, I love the piano covers of "The Unforgiven".

Going to the other end of the spectrum away from instrumentals, I enjoy Pentatonix for their a cappella covers. Pop music isn't necessarily technically complicated since it follows a basic formula (though they also occasionally cover other genres), but it still amazes me what five people can do with just their voices.

↑ I'm probably biased because they're from the same area, but Scala are usually very much on-point with covers of songs you wouldn't necessarily expect would work. Radiohead's "Creep", or lesser known interpretations of Divinyls' "I Touch Myself" and Wheatus' "Teenage Dirtbag" are a few examples of how universally executable music can be.

Also love how they never shy away from adding appurtenant expletives to their singing. Not something you'd immediately associate with choir ensembles.

Given the geographic limitations they're dealing with, and being the perfectionists that Kolacny's are, I never understood how—over the course of nearly 25 years—the brothers continuously managed to find competent replacements for their choir.

Listening to Pentatonix' cover of "Papaoutai", they look like a talented bunch. Definitely worthy of some additional exploring.

Speaking of a cappella ensembles, Loituma's interpretation of 30s Finnish polka ditty "Ievan Polkka" is fantastic. It highlights one of the world's most vowel-rich languages, that is Finnish. Additionally, each of the members could donate a lung and still have a larger lung capacity than the average human. Not to mention their concentration level.

Haven't hear Apocalyptica's covers of Metallica, will have to check them out.
