Nas had the most extended vocabulary i've ever heard from a teenager.

From the Main Source album Breaking Atoms, recorded in '91 when he was 17.

I love nas but 1 album and ether isn't as good as what Kendrick has done

Well yeah atliens, aquimeni, stankonia are classics and I like the love below but I think Kendrick is on a whole other level

Mf doom was probs my goat before k dot but that's pure bias tbh

Earl sweatshirt's first mixtape is one of the best teenage set of songs I've heard - he was 15/16 when it came out

Well we'll never be in agreement because you put too much stock in how much acclaim a given album gets and that's not the barometer I use.

But if I did, like I said no one can touch Outkast's overall discography, quality wise, innovation, creativity, evolution, longevity - their stuff from the 90s hasn't dated, it still sounds modern.

No one is on their level if I'm judging strictly by their body of work, but I don't.

Anyway, Kendrick is not my favourite but I'm at least thankful that there are rappers like him being praised. In an era with people like Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty and the rest of the mumble/coonery style rappers you have to appreciate someone like Kendrick.

No one will ever be in agreement over who the GOAT is. The more important fact is that Kendrick has not only entered into the conversation, but is rightfully talked about as one of the top 3.

That in itself is impressive.

Live rap is probably the worst thing ever tbh.

Not per definition, but good and accurate live performances are indeed rare.

Not only does the song structure and beat have to be right for it to work live, it's one thing sounding good on tape, it's another being a good live performer as you don't get any second tries.

Many '80s and early '90s albums have that gated reverb sound about them which creates a venue/live type feel and almost guarantees for it to work live if the rapper in question gives a solid delivery.

As close to a studio recording as it gets.

its generally hard for rappers to put on a live show unless its hype as f**k

ive seen mf doom live and it wasnt the greatest gig but i knew that going into it, but seeing dizzee play the entirity of boy in da corner or even seeing death grips was mental

i looked the other day to see if gza was good live as liquid swords is one of my favourite albums of all time, and it looked awful live

Yeah pretty much my point - the entire structure of the beat has to allow for it to work in front of a live audience, not to mention the fact that not every good rapper is per definition an accurate live performer.

Having live musicians where possible would also enhance the experience.

↑ True. A piano or sax virtuoso delivering a fine hook would instantly take the experience to another level.

Link doesn't work but I presume it was something to do with 4:44?

Just had my first proper listen to the whole thing. Not a massive fan of Jay-Z but this album is very good IMO.

I feel like some of his albums got boring half way through but this one just keeps ticking. Caught their eyes with Frank Ocean is so, so good!

Classic? Maybe.
