For all you JCLs that think rap only started when Public Enemy invented it this video will give you a quick history lesson.
30 years of rap eloquently explained in 5 minutes by Mr B.

No Lil Wayne?

That is a question, i've never been a massive listener of any music but Lil Wayne has some quality lyrics and his execution is like something i don't hear anywhere else.

In terms of the one I like listening to the most it has to be Ludacris.

I was never a massive fan his music... although I'm a fan of the man himself, I think he would have achieved great things outside his music career had he lived longer.

Musically, the man for me is a good example of an emcee that gets labelled as an "amazing lyricist" due to content and concept alone. Talk about something "deep" and make your political opinions rhyme and suddenly you're an amazing lyricist... that bit doesn't work for me.

Cencept should be thrown out the window (when judging someone as a "lyricist"), it's the style of lyricism that makes someone an amazing lyricist in my eyes. Tupac was like many other far too literal lyricists, there was too much focus on getting a point across, no poetry. It's like spelling everything out for dumb people.

The concept's still important of course, 9 times out of 10 someone's favourite track is their favourite track because they can relate to it in some way, not because of how it's worded.

Asside from that, style, flow, voice (can't underestimate that... listen to Guru!), originality... Tupac was seriously lacking. He was never gonna get a mention mate, he wouldn't even be in my top 15/20.

KRS-1 deserves a mention too.

Apart from all his other stuff this one has to go down as a classic:

My fave!

Some of his later stuff of course, but it was at a time when mainstream rappers had to be schooled and schooled HARD!!!!

"Yo I'm strictly 'bout skills and dope lyrical costing, realing on talent, not marketing and promotion"

"I'm not your run of the mill, cos for the mil I don't run"

He was one of the originators, probably involved in all the block parties in the late 70's as a teen. Nas has said that the first thing he does when startting a new album is listen to this guy for inspiration.

... can't believe no-one's mentioned Big Daddy Kane yet

If 2pac was in your time, so was he. That song was released in the late '90s
