When I returned I got a black cab and did the same journey. £165.

Luckily it was on expenses.

Lucky there wasn't a terrorist attack cos the prices would have surged
Lucky the apps were working or they wouldn't have had a clue where to go
Nice to know that a company paying minimal tax can pay slave labour to a driver
Sadly I still have to pay my full lot plus the expenses it takes to run a vehicle that I made a commitment to as a trade.

Starman far be it from me to besmirch your profession but I find it a little hard to believe that a business involving quite a lot of cash, and no oversight of that cash, wouldn't be a little creative with the old tax

Uber is shit. Everything about it is shit. But unless you compete with it more effectively it will finish off black cabs. The single biggest reason people don't use black cabs more is the cost. It's always a nervous experience getting in one if you're paying with your own money.

At the moment the black taxi industry reminds me of where HMV was 10 years ago. Carry on regardless, still charge £13 for a CD. You know how that ends.

Mate there is creative tax avoidance making the job workable for a self employed man and there is a huge company paying minimal offshore taxes and taking the piss out of all of us.
I agree that on certain fares a licensed taxi is far too expensive but one reason is the sheer amount of vehicles on London's roads and the amount of road closures . Traffic lights staying red for too long etc
During holiday times and the like it's staggering how much cheaper the rides can go
I think uber are a serious threat to the cab trade
There is a marked fall off in people now doing the knowledge
I have 8 years left on my mortgage and hoping the job gets me over the line
I am buying older vehicles inheriting someone else's problems as I have not got the faith in tucking myself up with a 60 grand vehicle plus interest that has not had time to find out if it works properly
People are getting 60 miles out of the electric vehicle before needing to recharge ( less if using the wipers , lights heater etc) it's not really in our gift to change
We have to drive the vehicle that tfl license
Cameron and his cronies gave uber a free ride because of family ties
You know those old school ties that stop anyone from rising above their station?

Starman, how long have you been a cab driver and how many different vehicles have you gone through in that time?

Have you ever picked up a footballer or celebrity?

Got my badge in September 1990
Hired a cab from York way motors 104 pounds per week
No power steering or servo assisted breaking
I was f***ked at the end of every day what with having to think about every job and getting a bit of grief for doing the fare the way you called it on the knowledge
You leatrn one way but drive another
It takes a few punters shuffling their feet in the traffic in Oxford street to realise the straightest way ain't always the best way.
I rented a further couple of cabs before driving my grandads cab in 94 after he died
Not a freemans though
I had to look after my Nan
Finally brought a new one in 02 it saw me through to 2016
When someone hit me up the Arse
Well actually it was a transit that had been hit up the Arse and pushed into me
Got paid out but cab was worth bollocks by then so took out loan for a cab with about 6 years left
2 months in someone jumped a light in front of me across Harley street
Wrote it off
Right palava getting proper value but after hanging out insurance paid out
Brought an 06
Spent a fortune on it last year
Always got them fingers crossed
So owned 4
Rented 3
28 years
Shows that they are pretty sturdy I guess

True Grit is the best movie of the 2010s.

Also, the Coens are the best American directors of the past 40 years.

Lynch's filmography does not stand up to the Coen's, they are more versatile and consistent.

Lynch does get major props for Twin Peaks though (not the reboot, still cant believe that tragedy).

Tarantino is one of the greatest of all time

People are scared of naming him because they think it's too obvious a choice

But look at his career ffs. It's ridiculous

Am I the only one who doesn't care who directs a film?

I mean I have never ever watched a film based on whos directing it.

Who stars in it? yeah. Who directs it? never

Marvel films are the GOAT films of our time and I couldn't tell you who directs any of them without looking it up

Tarantino isn't named because he isn't an obvious choice, not because people are scared to.

Wait, so if I like those films it means Tarantino is the best director of the last 40 years?

No that's not what I said at all

He's a contender. A big shout. But never gets a mention.

Kubrick was brilliant.

You have to consider Spielberg

Mike Hodges a personal favourite, as is Ken Loach

Rule of thumb is if you like several of a director's films, of course they're a great director. So many directors only make one good film. Most make none
