Coming 2 America

Was never going to be as good as the first but nostalgia galore which was good.

All the main people are back which was nice to see.

Comfortable 7/10

Special shout out to James Earl Jones for still being alive and acting.

Watched a few of the films available to stream that are around Oscar nominations
And the best is the trial of the Chicago 7
Made by west wing writer Aaron sorkin
It’s the true story of how these men of different backgrounds came to find themselves in a courtroom for an incident protesting the Vietnam war
Frank langella turns in a great performance as the judge as do all in the fine ensemble cast
Sacha Baron Cohen
Eddie Redmayne
Michael keaton( with his best movie stealing pants on) and many more
Spielberg had the rights to this And in 2008 wanted to make it with a cast of unknowns
But it’s hard to see how it would beat this telling with its heavy hitters
This would have been a massive film with a theatrical release
It deserves to be seen
I think mank will win a lot as Hollywood love patting itself on the back but I found that film far too in love with itself
I consider myself a bit of a movie buff but found a lot of the references obscure

The other films I watched were
Ma Rainey’s black bottom
Worth a look
The two leads were very good
Viola Davies is putting together a great body of work
And of coarse Chadwick boseman lights up the screen. Sad to think that a career so bright should be cut short
It was a play originally and it shows
It’s very stagey
As is one night in Miami
I really wanted to like it
A film with a message
But I found myself dragging my feet and looking at my watch about halfway through
Once again
Good turns from all involved and each individual story told alone is fascinating
But the contrivance of a fictional meet felt preachy
Again I would say worth a look
There is still room for a decent Ali biopic
The problem is how could you improve on the greatest?
The last I watched is my hardest sell to our male members
Piece’s of a woman contains a 20 minute labour scene
Having watched it 3 times in the flesh myself I must say Vanessa Kirby (princess margaret in the crown) gives a convincing performance.
But aside from that the film moves at a snails pace to its conclusion
Kirby is fantastic in her desolation but it’s a pretty tough watch
You will probably need to watch something dumb and fun after as a palate cleanser

Ali was too charismatic for anyone to portray, no one can capture that boisterous energy.

Even when I was young I remember noting how boring Will Smith made Ali seem.

Sam Cooke is my favourite artist of all time so I'll eventually watch One Night In Miami just to see how he's portrayed.

Definitely agree on Ali. Love Will Smith but no one would do justice to the greatest

I would say the portrayal of Sam Cooke is very good
I don’t know if the guy was singing but his voice was beautiful
I have seen documentary’s about Sam Cooke and his death and the story would make a great biopic if there isn’t one already
As I said
This felt a bit simplistic in tone
From supper club crooner to activist
Too big a story to shoehorn in 4 takes in one night

It just goes to show that taste and level of production outside of the Marvel and the better Directors is down the pan.

My issue with Coming 2 America is that it was like a Coming to America parody.

Forced injection of modern music, tasteless dance offs, the plot was iffy and the new guy (the son) was crap.

No, not for me, I'd say its worth one watch but I'd never watch it again, where as the first film was goofy and funny, you could still take it seriously because the film was so well acted and Directed.

Movies today just lack the heart of 80's / 90's films, outside of Marvel anyway.

Which is why I'm worried for the new Dune and Top Gun films ........... I really hope they don't fk them up but I'm not holding my breath.

Tbf even Marvel would be pretty fked if it wasn't for Kevin Feige, he's the real genius behind keeping that franchise together.
