SHORT FILMS Galore

Postby Angelito » Sat Jan 27, 2018 3:22 pm

So, yeah, we don't have a thread for short films specifically.

Please post links to short films you've liked (YT, Vimeo, or any other platform) over the years. Could be from any country, any language.

I'll start by sharing one of my favorite short films, I Love Sarah Jane. This is one of Mia Wasikowska's first films.

And here's another one:

Loved the cinematography. Particularly the tracking shot in the opening scene has—despite the presumably narrow budget—a high-end feel to it and effectively sets a the right tone for the rest of the film. The young actors all put in a solid performance. It's a pity only Mia Wasikowska has been able to kick-start an acting career. Some lost potential in there perhaps? The director effectively blends the desolate setting of a zombie apocalypse with a dose of vengeance and unalloyed affinity.

* * * SPOILER ALERT * * *

Difficult to find any hick-ups, but if I really had to nitpick; Joey repeatedly telling Jimbo to get it going seemed rather redundant as there was no obvious dithering from his side. Then again, one could argue it's part of Joey's apparent bully-type of demeanor toward his younger, physically inferior peers.

I'm undecided about the comical CGI used to generate the explosion. Though, if intentional, one could make a case it's actually brilliant. An (in?)direct hommage to Sion Sono, or the director making a statement to the viewer, a cheeky middle finger toward the expensive, high-tech, elaborate methods used in Hollywood. Brilliant or bungle, for the observant eye it's certainly an effective chuckle-provider, which adds to the film's polyvalence.

Good points.

Agreed about Joey's redundant dialogs. I found it annoying at the beginning, but I think it was the director's attempt to establish him as a jerk-ish character.

Talking about Sion Sono, have you watched Strange Circus? I watched it a few years back and it's such a mind-fuck movie. What are your observations about Strange Circus (if you have watched it)?

Used to have film four back in the late 90s/ early 00s just for the short films. They really specialised in them and had dozens every week.

What the F is this?

Skipped to three random parts of the video and concluded it's the worst thing ever.

Comes from them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mighty_Boosh.

I was introduced to the video 8ish years ago, but somehow, it gets better the more I watch it (not that I watch it more than once a year).
