Placed a bet on betfair and i think it should be voided as an invalid bet if starwars doesn't qualify

It was eligible for Best Picture but didn't get enough votes to earn a nomination.

^^ Abrams best director

Silly bet really, I haven't even seen the film. I thought that he might win because of Hollywood politics

Oh, well in that case it doesn't matter if the film got nominated for Best Picture, but as Abrams didn't get a nomination in the Best Director category then you'll have lost.

I tend to use betfair for low value, long odds bets and often just on a hunch

Made a killing when Corbyn was elected Labour leader

Political bets are usually my biggest winners

Fair enough. What were the odds you got on Abrams?

He was a bit of a long-shot but it wouldn't have been that crazy had he been nominated.

Star Wars has been nominated for Best -

Sound Editing

Sound Mixing

Film Editing

Visual Effects

Original Score

But none of the major categories. Reckon you should look to get your money back.

Original Score and Film Editing are major categories imo

Something I've never understood, what's the difference between Best Director and Best Picture?

I don't understand how a movie or director can win one and not the other.

Surely If you are the best director then by definition you should have the best movie and vice versa.

You have to consider what makes a good film, and the role a director plays varies from film to film. Some might be elevated by some incredible actors, others by a brilliantly written screenplay - these are aspects of a film that are, to a large degree, out of the director's control to some extent. Some directors are great at getting a performance out of their actors, which is a big part of their job, but if the actor is no good or unsuitable for the role that can detract from the entire film and the director can't do much about that. There's also some directors who prefer to do less and allow other people around them to do more whereas others want as much control as possible.

The award given out at the Oscars is for the person who has excelled in the art of direction, not the director of the best film. How exactly you judge that is more difficult to pinpoint but with certain directors you can get a certain feel for every film they've done. It's also worth noting that the two awards you've mentioned are closely linked, with 63 of the 87 films that have won Best Picture having also won Best Director.

The Green Mile: Great screenplay, great cast of actors. Any half competent director could have made that and the film would have been superb

Clockwork Orange: A complex screenplay with the potential to alianate viewers, an unknown cast and hardly any money? Step forward Mr Kubrick

So what is The Revenant more likely to win, Best Picture or Director? (Assuming it doesn't win both)

It's difficult to say. I would say Iñárritu would be a strong bet for Best Director had he not won it last year for Birdman - rarely does a director win it two years running - although the lengths in which he went to with this film might still see him win it. I think he's probably still the favourite and if I had to put money on it I'd say The Revenant might miss out on Best Picture to Spotlight. It's pretty much a lock for Best Actor (DiCaprio) and Cinematography (Lubezki) though.

EDIT: I think it's all worth considering what The Revenant's greatest strengths are. From a filmmaking perspective, it's insanely good - it looks absolutely incredible, contains some superb performances and has a truly visceral quality - but it remains a pretty straightforward survival/ revenge story that whilst fulfilling its purpose, it's not something revolutionary. The way it was made and some of the sequences are incredibly original but the lack of complexity to it means I'm more inclined to think it does well in the more technical categories (direction, acting, cinematography, editing) but will miss out on the big prize.

So what's all this crap about no black actors being nominated?

Should they be nominated just cos they are black? Surely that's even more offensive?

If you're good enough, you get nominated.
