Discuss the new season here

Major Changes:

New points system

25,18,15,10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1 is the new system

No Refueling

After some consideration and reconsideration the formula 1 teams got their wish and refueling is now banned for the season. As well as saving the teams money the tactical game has now changed. Cars will now be heavier from the start which will put much more strain on the tyres for the first 3rd of the race. Drivers will also have to battle between going all out and making sure they have enough fuel to get to the end.

Dramatic engine cut offs in the last couple of laps happened all the time back when there was no refueling previously. Although the new technologies, readouts and modern communication systems should mean that drivers are much more aware of their situation than the drivers were then.

KERS

Despite the FIA going a long way to make the KERS system more appealing by increasing the minimum weight and saying you can only use it at lower speeds, the teams have all agreed not to use it this year.

Tyre warmers banned

Teams cannot give their cars tyres that are already on their way up to temperature. This will make out laps after pit stops and qualy sessions all the more treacherous.

New Teams

There are 3 new teams to make the grid the biggest it has been in ages.

Virgin Racing, Hispania racing and the return of the giant Lotus make up this years grid.

Personally I like the new changes except for the new points system which will end up ruining the season imo.

The idea that drivers do not try their best to win is nonsense and the points increase at the top will not make drivers push harder when they are already on the limit. Drivers would prefer to take less points than no points for crashing out (except for maybe Hamilton and Vettel).

You don't often get exciting drives for first, the 3-7 spots are usually where the war is. Usually 1 car has the best setup and they bomb through for the win with maybe only a couple of moments of doubt, that team will now be rewarded more for not working any harder.

You get a few races where the first spot is really up for grabs but not enough to justify giving the winner that many points.

Either way I am really excited for the new season and will be cheering on the returning Lotus team this season.

How many races do you'll think it will be before the FIA makes an absolute farce of itself yet again?

I'm liking the new rules; especially the re-fueling and tyre rules.

The non-heated tyres one will cause some havoc on the first lap of a new set!

Come on Ferrari, I shall be cheering for them and their drivers Alonso and Massa. Of course I will also be cheering for Michael Schumacher, the greatest driver of all time.

Every year i feel more and more distanced from the F1 i thought i use to know and love. Ive been watching F1 for 15 years now and watched it demise in consecutive years.

Some of these rule changes are preposterous. One example is the rule that states that if you qualify in the top ten then they must start on their quali tyres. Its rules like this which creae all this politics we have in this sport. It was the double defusior last year. This year its the McLaren wing. I know its somewhat irresponsible but i was a fan of "do what ever you like" best car wins.

This year i cant decide who i want to win. Webber prob gets my vote.

I thought BMW Sauber folded?

Vettel is in big trouble here, a Ferrari 1-2 in the first race will sour my weekend.

Brawn are now Mercedes GP, Schumacher and Rosbergs team.

I feel for Vettel, especially as mechanical faults are something Red Bull are very familiar with.

It wasn't an exciting race really, the cars were pushing as hard as they logically could as always (which is why the points change is wrong imo) and I agree with the commentators that the ongoing lack of a second pit stop and lack of longer pitstops to mix things up could stifle the races throughout the season.

Lets see what happens over the next couple of races but I fear that the constructors championship could be over by the halfway point and the drivers much more closed than we would like it to be by then (maybe just between two) due to the ferrari quality and because the new points system aiding the winners too much. I do say that with some bitterness as I hate Ferrari (maybe more than SE hates Spurs ;) ) but I would say it for any team in that position as that is not what we want if the sport is to be exciting.
