Why is the North so bad at rugby?

Why is the North so bad at rugby?

Postby Apollo » Wed Jan 16, 2013 3:41 am

I dont ever recall a period in time when the Northern Hemisphere dominated the South.

Occasionally a team from up North will beat one us Southerners and Celebrate like they've just discovered fire, but time and time again New Zealand, South Africa and Australia top the World rankings and play the far better rugby.

Is our food more nutritious?
Is our water chemically enhanced?
Are our dumbells heavier?

For a collection of countries who really do love their Rugby the North sure do blow at it.... Any ideas why?

Probably because we're shit at football and play other sports instead.

What about 2003? I would say that the Northern Hemisphere dominated just a bit in that year. Namely with England winning the World Cup in Australia.

Here in SA all the emphasis in schools is placed on rugby (and cricket in summer). Most other sports have to rely on clubs and get less support from sponsors etc. Also the tradition of rugby in the richer parts of the country is greater than that of football etc.

Rugby gets as much attention here as football in England, and thats why we're better and vice versa

That was a good year, for England
Pity that sort of form was never sustained though and the North reclaimed its dominance

Australia are the biggest underachievers recently. South Africa and New Zealand are great, what are you Aussies doing that's so much better than us?

I don't watch rugby much, but I don't think we're underachieving, the nation's just not caring so much about the sport anymore and as a result we get less talent coming through. We're exactly where we should be really.

By that I assume you mean our own football code?
I think real football has the most participation (ie most registered players), but Australian Football easily gets the biggest crowds.

Modern Rugby is about basic brute strength and size.

Wingers USED to be smaller guys. Now they're the size of Second row forwards!! Centres are built like prop forwards!!

Football isn't. Barcelona for instance.

Also, they breed em bigger down under....!!

Thats shocking. My kids are all grown up so im a bit out of touch with the schools now days. Back in the day rugby was seen as a get even hour in my school. Us little un`s could get our own back on the bigger boys lol...

The same question could be asked about the England football team. England gave the world both football and rugby, and yet we are gash at both

It's more rugby league up here though mate. We did a bit of union for the sake of it but everyone just wants league.

Like pudpop said, I played football at a separate club but at high school I was forced to play rugby. My parents were actually against it but I guess at that time you couldn't really say no, being year 1 and 2.
