The answer to the question is really very simple. The manager.

It was the start of Arsene teams being worked out ... we became vulnerable to hoof-ball. At the time we had the players to stiffen up our defence but Arsene insisted on his way and his way only ... a recurring theme as it was to turn out ....

Did we lose the CL games because of this? no we lost because as a team our 'belief' in our invincibility was damaged, our manager told us that playing the same way would win all ... against mediocre opposition in the EPL that worked for a while ... but against the very best we came up just that bit short, as time went on 'that bit' became a 'chasm' .... the term 'mentally weak' became synonymous with Arsene's teams .... in the end we stopped even qualifying, despite a team technically good the tactically deficiencies swung even the EPL results ....

The Invincibles were very good at beating (or not losing) to good teams, with the right coaching they could and should have challenged Europe's very best, but that coaching was lacking, luck went against us and the European Cups proved beyond reach ....

If we get back to those heady days let's hope we have a manager who's arrogance is matched by his tactical ability ....
