We may never know really. If we stayed, who's to say it wouldn't be worse than it is now? It's all speculation.

We went backwards and are no closer to competing for top players than we were at Highbury - in fact further away.
Plus the stadium is a truly awful place to be if you are interested in any kind of atmosphere.

If we'd stayed we would be a West Ham, Fulham, Crystal Palace operation .... probably with similar results ....

Biggest 3 club stadiums in the EPL (without Emirates) City, Utd, Liverpool ... top three teams? probably the same three ...

Highbury would have had us down with Everton, M'boro, A.Villa, Leeds, Sheff Wed on capacity .... you can't say for sure but I reckon it's a pretty safe bet the football would have been nearer that level as well .....

To compete you need a big stadium to attract the big money, then an owner who gets a great manager, then gives him the cash to buy great players ... it's not rocket science it's football .....

TBH all that matters is having a filthy rich ambitious owner now, the mistake was not getting usmanov, we would be 100 times better with usmanov at highbury than kroenke at emirates, that's life

For self sustainable model it was the right decision though

We wouldn't have survived as a top club if we hadn't of moved though.

Considering we have a self sustaining model, players got more expensive, sugar daddy owners made it even worse.

We were a better club and team back then but that wouldn't of carried on through till today any different, Wenger would still of been in charge, players would of left etc.

Tottenham moved for the same reasons.

We needed a bigger stadium, end of.

The stadium turned out to be a bad idea - I understood the rationale.. that we would become one of the biggest clubs in the world able to compete with the likes of Real Madrid etc, but it was a lemon pretty much after the work started. Financial Fair Play never really hit home and the money gap just got larger. We're less able to compete for top players now than we ever were.

So all in all, the stadium was nothing more than a way to make more money for owners.

In terms of the stadium itself, it gets plaudits, but in my view it is one of the worst stadiums in the league. The atmosphere is appalling and the design is simply awful. For those that have been, you can not fail to notice how the roof line totally obsures the rest of the stadium upper levels so you can;t see the rest of the crowd, taking away a really important part of the overall experience. I hated it from the very first time I went (the opening game - DB10 Testimonial). The designer/architect should be shot.

Bottom line is that Highbury was a better experience all round.
Hate to say it but Spurs' new stadium is also far better in every regard other than the team that plays in it and the fans who frequent it.

I think a new stadium was necessary. But the one we got was disappointing at the time and no amount of 'Arsenalisation' was going to fix the fundamental issues it has to this day. But oh well, we're stuck with it. None of us will see another one in our lifetimes and I have no clue if it's possible to alter it in any meaningful way

But at least it doesn't look like a toilet

I love how there are people who actually promote the "Wenger built the stadium by himself" narrative.

Loool

He should have a stand or tier named after him though, like Ferguson.

Wouldn't mind Arsene Wenger Stadium either.

Are people suggesting we'd still be at Highbury if it wasnt for Wenger?

Is it that hard for them to imagine alternative timelines?

Fans paid for it and still are paying for it. At the time the project was agreed it was wrongly assumed that matchday revenue would continue to be the most important stream of revenue for the club. Their real motivation was to increase ticket prices, capacity and revenue from premium seats.

They did it very effectively.

Let’s go watch some Wengerball at the Wengerdome.
You can find the Wengerdome at the intersection of Arsene Avenue and Knows Street.
