Sorry but what did he do to waste his career? He was frequently injured. Which is not something one can control. What else?

He doesn't have to retire. He's just choosing to because he won't do as I've described above. Many pro players did that in years gone by. Some top level players ended up finishing their career at non-league level - just because they wanted to play football.

It’s not that simple. The main thing for a club when dealing with someone with jacks situation is paying his insurance. He can become a real liability when it comes to injuries and I gather that’s why people are avoiding him. We’ve seen it with other players like Owen Hargreaves as well. Massive talent but retired because he couldn’t get a contract.

Then he can pay his own insurance, or not have any insurance.

Does he want to continue playing? That's the question. If he only wants to continue playing if the money is right then playing football isn't the priority.

He has to accept that he is damaged goods, and only worth what that's worth.

Did you see his recent interview with Ornstein? He pretty much admits that. He has to balance the fact that he clearly wants to keep playing while not doing permanent damage to his body that costs money to rehabilitate. He’s not going to get a big paycheck ever again so he has to think about that. It’s hard not to sympathize with him.

I think I'll reserve my sympathy for people with real problems.

Didn’t realize your sympathy was running out. Do save it for the more deserving.

My heart finds it hard to bleed over muliti-millionaires complaining about not being able to make more money
.

I agree. I feel for him on the footballing side, but he's only 29 and minted. Go do your badges and come back as a manager somewhere.

Smoking cigarettes and cigars and partying like he was in 1980s/early 90s English football will not have helped him at all.
Then he had a big mouth off the pitch - yeah we all found it funny at the time, but when he got on the pitch you can bet that his opponents were itching to leave one on him.
He was unprofessional at a time when he needed to focus on football and taking the next step up, which could have been world-class.

His main problem as not releasing the ball quickly enough. He would draw fouls from opponents. It can be a clever thing to do if you can do it then ride the tackle like players like Klinnsmann and Bergkamp would do. But Wilshere would just leave his leg there to get clattered.

You're hyping it up way too much. In the 80s and early 90s, players would be in the pub immediately after games. This wasn't Jack at all. In terms of his attitude, optics outside the club doesn't count for much when you're known to be someone who bosses it in training (and regularly performs on match days) as he did when he was with us. Seems like a pretty poor attempt at trying to shift the narrative surrounding Jack's time with us. There's a reason why everyone still loves him.

Looking at his injury list, there weren't many recurring problems. Usually you'd stay away from players who have particularly weak areas, signified by recurring injuries in the same area. Overall, he just had terrible luck. A cleaner lifestyle would almost cirtainly have helped somewhat, and drawing in fouls definitely didn't help.

The fact is, we're pretty desperate in midfield right now. I say bring him in on pay as you play contract. Get him playing deep, the way he always preferred, the position he was in when he bossed the game against Barca (also far less likely to draw fouls in this position). It's a long shot because he'll be rusty... but I'd take a 60%, off-the-pace Jack with his distribution, vision, IQ and tenacity over Xhaka and Elneny ANY DAY!

Partey seems to be the one covering more ground, as does Lokonga. Xhaka is as static as ever, with painfully average distribution that does nothing to influence the flow or pace of the game... and this is even when he's at his best for us (which is nothing compared to his Alonso-esque international form). He's never been effective in the Prem, even when he has won back some of the fans through effort alone, and that's just fact. Elneny could only ever be a sub with legs and a good engine that you'd bring on to see out the game... so right now, we have two midfielders of quality, one who's been in and out with injury, another who is young and new. We can't turn our nose up at Jack, I have no doubt he could force his way into this team and improve it.

Exactly. We're extending a former player a courtesy. Eboue trained w/ us briefly as well not so long ago.

He plays in a position where we desperately need quality/cover. Looks like a no brainer to me.

If he comes back to train, I reckon it'd only be a month or two before he's playing for us.

Wenger would have thrown him in at some point. But this is micro-manager extraordinaire Arteta, a man who bought a brand new team so it reflected his 'vision'.

It will never happen.

The night Jack outclassed Xavi & Iniesta - worth reminding just how good he was that night.

The way his career turned out is pretty shocking really.

Jack always had that centre of gravity type balance when on the ball. He should have been great, but injuries did for him.

Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is not seeking a pay-as-you-play deal at the Emirates after boss Mikel Arteta offered him the opportunity to keep fit at the Gunners' training ground. The 29-year-old has 34 England caps but has been without a club since his release from Bournemouth earlier this year. (Metro)
