Kenny Sansom

Former Arsenal and England defender Kenny Sansom has revealed that he is living on the streets after alcoholism took over his life.

The veteran of two World Cups has been sleeping on a park bench after falling on hard times.

In March, he was rushed to hospital after collapsing in the street.

Sansom revealed in his 2008 autobiography that he had struggled all of his life with addictions to alcohol and gambling, and the Arsenal legend has finally hit rock-bottom:

"I've been living homeless for 10 days," he told The Sun.

"That's because I've got no money, I'm a drunk, I'm feeling not very well and I'm a gambler.

"I've been living on the street. It's not good living on the bench."
The newspaper report claims that Sansom, 54, has been drinking up to SEVEN bottles of rosé wine every day, and disappeared on Tuesday from his sister's house where he had been staying.

Alcoholism in ex-footballers has gained a higher profile in recent years, with Paul Gascoigne, Tony Adams and Paul Merson going public with their struggles.

Ouch. Hopefully the club can raise some money to get him some treatment, and make sure it works.

Nice to hear the club is at least making an effort to help him sort out his problems.

Good luck Kenny...

Apparently there's going to be a banner of support hung from club level at the Emirates Cup.

Met him at a stadium tour, he seemed a really nice guy. I wish him all the best in turning his life back around.

absolutely quality player. always gave his heart and soul, tough as nails. we miss his type in the dressing room, never afraid to get stuck in. he;s always had a colourful life since drink messed up his later career, real shame. hope he gets well.

Hope he gets himself sorted. Hard to make my mind up on who was the better out of him or Winterburn.
I want Carl Jenkinson back in a Arsenal shirt next season.

Was the real reason I started supporting Arsenal. He came to my primary school due to his sister being a dinner lady and gave a talk.
From that day forward he was a lege to me.

Such a tragic thing but, so many footballers fall prey to the drink, drugs, gambling. I put it down to poor education of the pitfalls of celebrity.
Hope he gets better and I hope he has the support of his family.

Sad to hear this, not just because he's a former player but I have sympathy for anyone who suffers from a serious illness. I really hope he can get the help he obviously needs and pray that the club don't just throw money at him but help him to get the long term support that he needs to turn his life around for good.

I've had a few clients and students that are recovering alcoholics /drug addicts and I see how difficult it is for them but the good news is that it can be done with the right help and support. I wish him the very, very best of luck.
Let's Make Arsenal Great Again!

Kenny Sansom: Ex-Arsenal & England defender in hospital

Image

Former England and Arsenal defender Kenny Sansom is "ill" in hospital.

The 61-year-old does not have coronavirus, according to a tweet from his Twitter account.

Sansom, who won 86 caps for England and played 394 games for Arsenal, has had well-publicised problems with alcoholism and gambling.

In 2015, he revealed he had contemplated suicide after becoming homeless because of his problems.

A tweet read: "He is being well cared for and does not have Covid-19. Kenny's family and close friends kindly ask the media to respect his and their privacy, plus that of the healthcare workers treating Kenny."

Sansom, who played in the 1982 and 1986 World Cups, made his debut at 16 for Crystal Palace in 1975, before going on to play for Arsenal, Newcastle, QPR and Coventry.

Just read this. The Mail are saying he was beaten up.

Really sad to see Kenny fall so low. He was a great player for Arsenal.

I hope he can recover from this and make something of the rest of his life.
