While the "famous four" is assosiated with Tony Adams Lee Dixon Nigel Winterburn and Steve Bould, we had many successful defense lineups, how would you rank them?

L.Dixon---S.Bould---T.Adams---N.Winterburn
(88-89 Chip, 90-91 Chip, 92–93 FA Cup + Coca Cola Cup, 93–94 European Cup Winners' Cup)

L.Dixon---M.Keown---T.Adams---N.Winterburn
(97-98 Chip + FA Cup)

L.Dixon---S.Campbell---T.Adams---A.Cole
(01-02 Chip + FA Cup)

Lauren---S.Campbell---K.Touré---A.Cole
(02–03 FA Cup, 03–04 Invincibles Chip, 04–05 FA Cup)

Also put up a poll. You'd get a better understanding of peoples' opinion.

Done, added poll, although this is more of a "rate these" thread instead of a "pick the best" thread.

The top one was best, then the bottom one, the other two were transitions.

Yeah the first one was the best but Keown was a mighty defender too,the fact that he was brought back to the club is testament to how good he was.But for me the original famous four were an awesome unit, those were the days of one nil to the Arsenal afterall.

Also just to point out that David Seaman,Jens Lehmann and John Lukic need to be mentioned too ;)

Wouldn't call the second foursome a transition, they did last for about 6-7 years.

Just noticed I've made a mistake in the third foursome, it's suppose to me Sol Campbell instead of Keown, fixed.

The base squad for that era was:

Jennings

Rice Young O'Leary Nelson

Price Rix Brady

McDonald Traitor

Almost every game, you could put money on those starting, though of course it did vary with injuries etc.

Don't forget that during that era, we'd pinched the Terry Neill as manager plus Pat Jennings and Willie Young from the filth. SuperMac came in for £333,000, and the rest were homegrown.

Prior to that was the Double winning squad with Bertie Mee at the helm, but the team fell apart, and we spent a few years lucky to stay up on more than one occasion, but during that period both ManUre and the filth went down. Happy days :cloud9:

For those unaware "traitor" was otherwise known as Frank Stapleton.

It's the third one for me. Individually they're the best we've had in their positions.

I think looking at what they've won would be a little missleading as you could have the best back four of all time with 6 shit players in front of them and they wont win shit! So instead of as a unit, or as a team, I'm looking at the individually.

I dont mean to be picky but the 2001-2002 Double winning team was mostly Lauren at rightback, Dixon was a bit part player in his last season (6 starts and 12 sub) So he didnt really play with A.Hole and S.Campbell very often. Lauren would be playing in our strongest line up. Adams played, what about 13 times? but he would have been considered in our strongest line up that season.

I voted for L.Dixon---M.Keown---T.Adams---N.Winterburn

I think Keown JUST about edges Bould. Bould was at his peak when Keown wasnt at his though depsite their similar ages.
