Former Arsenal legend Marc Overmars has told Arsenal.com that he has modeled his coaching career on former boss Arsene Wenger while also revealing he would love to join the coaching staff at the Gunners after chatting to the Frenchman this week.
Overmars, joined Arsenal in 1997 for a fee of £5.5 million in the summer before Wenger’s first full season in charge, winning the Premier League and FA Cup double in his debut season with the Gunners.
The Dutchman became an Arsenal legend on the left wing and is seen as a key component in Wenger’s re-shaping of the North London club as a Premier League force.
Overmars told Arsenal.com: “I spoke with him (Arsene Wenger) on the training ground yesterday and if you see the facilities, what is available to the players nowadays, it is beautiful.
“For me walking around the training ground is emotional as a football player. To see how you would develop the talent, it is a beautiful place. For me the boss still doesn’t buy the most expensive players and that is the way I work with Go-Ahead Eagles in Holland, I learn’t a lot from him.
“You want to get to the young players before they get through, that is what he did with Patrick Vieira, and Thierry Henry when he was sitting on the bench at Juventus. Emmanuel Petiti from AS Monaco, I think I was the only one who was a bit expensive. He was brilliant at buying talent for not much money.”
Overmars also told Arsenal.com that he would like to join Arsenal’s coaching staff if offered the opportunity. He said:
“When we are driving around here it feels unbelievably good. I feel home at one club, this club, the Arsenal. If they asked me to do something I would love to come.”
