Keown played in a team with a lot more defensively astute full backs and a midfield with the likes of Vieira, Petit and Gilberto ahead of him. Had he played in this current team, Lewa would eat him up. He was good but as part of that unit from 1998 - 2002, and on the few occasions in the CL when he came up against WC forwards like Diego Tristan and Gabriel Batistuta, he got merked.
I'm sorry but it just annoys me when former players big themselves up in the immediate aftermath of games.
What do you think of Petit saying on French TV he would love to play with HIS Arsenal against he current Arsenal and show them what's difference between men and kids ?
He also said they are more talented than him and his generation but aren't warrior. I think they aren't more talented at all but if he believe this ..
Good question. I haven't heard Petit's full remarks but I agree with the basis of what he's saying. I think his team would know how to exploit the weaknesses of this team.
When he speaks of talent, he probably means technical ability of the players throughout the squad. He played in a squad with the likes of Luzhny, Wreh, Vivas, Stepanovs, Upson, Volz, Suker, Pennant, Stephen Hughes. If we had the injury problems we have today we'd have been in deep trouble, but luckily the likes of Anelka, Overmars, Bergkamp, Dixon, Adams, Winterburn/Cole, Kanu, Parlour, Silvinho never ever seemed to get injured.
The first XI that Petit played in was far more talented and contained players who were specialists in their positions, rather than these hybrids of today, but the subs bench wasn't great. Wenger didn't need to organise that team in from 98 - 2002 because they organised themselves. The current team need someone like Simeone or Conte to discipline them on the touchline. Wenger is a non-interventionist and believes players can rectify their own mistakes so he keeps giving them chances to learn.
He remains an excellent mentor but a questionable task master.
