I'm going to start an Ottoman History book. Actually it's 7 books series by Johan Wilhelm Zinkeisen, goes until 1812. The whole series should be around 4500 pages so I'll probably stop after 2-3 books and read something else or read a fictional book at the same time. I love history but not sure I could go that far without a break.

jelaous. so jelaous.
always wanted to have that collection, it is not available here in Argentina.
Ottoman empire history is really hard to obtain here, most of the time books are too westernized and you feel some sort of judgement when analizing the period.
I want to get a book about Mevlevilik history. next time i go to istambul i will ask you about good bookstores if you dont mind.

Of course, I'd be happy to help.

Birds without Wings is a good book about Village life at the end of the ottoman rule.

Johnny Got His Gun

Goddamn that book goes from bad to worse. The book details a fate worse than death. But I like war novels, so I gave it a read.

This section is usually so quiet.. So, list some of your favorite books that you have read. It may be fiction or non-fiction. Ideally, a top-10 list, but whatever you prefer.

Anybody read the Malazan book of the fallen series? I'm currently on book 8-10. It's becoming more convoluted the longer it goes on...

Fiction
- Blood Meridian (Cormac McCarthy is the greatest living writer imo)
- Catch-22 (Funniest book I've ever read)
- The Hobbit (Tolkien's magnum opus)
- The Picture of Dorian Gray
- Native Son
- 11/22/63
- Crime and Punishment
- To Kill a Mockingbird
-Things Fall Apart
- The Man with the Golden Arm

Non-Fiction
- Sweet Thunder (Sugar Ray Robinson)
- Bob Dylan: Chronicles Vol. 1
- The Executioner's Song
- Mrs Kennedy and Me
- The Devil in the White City (Scorcese and DiCaprio are making this into a movie btw)
- Dream Boogie (Sam Cooke)
- Room Full of Mirrors (Jimi Hendrix)
- The Death of a President (JFK)
- On Writing (Stephen King)
- In Cold Blood

As a side note, is the Harry Potter series worth reading as an adult? I never caught the bug when I was younger, but now I'm kind of interested.

U fookin' wot m8?!

But for real, you should give the series a read. The films, while great in their own rights, do not completely capture the imagination of the reader the way in the series does and leave out some details found in the novels. I know it's cliché how it's commonly said that you can get lost in a good book, but it especially rings true with the Harry Potter series imo. Rowling managed to create an immense universe the reader can immerse themselves in in a way the films can never provide. Her world-building is absolutely magical (no pun intended) as you progress through the series and the character progressions really allow you to connect with them.
