Screw that book. The novel was a chore to get through. Was forced to read and analyze it in high school in one of my English classes—think it was AP Lit.

Also hated being forced to read As I Lay Dying in AP Lang. Maybe it was the stream of consciousness writing style Faulker employed.

Or maybe I just have a problem with being forced to read novels and analyze them to the point where they annoy me lol

I also read Wuthering Heights last year, actually. I sort of liked it. Lots of toxic characters with very unhealthy relationships ofc.

Here’s a couple for you DG:

Georgette Heyer :An Infamous Army. And also another ( the Spanish Bride) about the Peninsular wars leading up to the battle of Waterloo. http://www.georgette-heyer.com/books/spanish.html

Basically, having heard about the battle of Waterloo since forever, I knew nothing about it and this book is a fiction based on fact story which includes every correct detail of the war. Fascinating stuff and not a chore to read either.

Yeah, I have recently read a few Wilbur Smith books, as I started reading his stories in the early 80’s and forgotten much about them. If anyone enjoys great adventure stories, he wrote River God, set in ancient Egyptian times about creating and hiding a Pharoh’s tomb and The Seventh Scroll about a recent search for the tomb.....basically an amazing treasure hunt. Great books.

Have you read the Sharpe books by Bernard Cornwell? I've read the books twice and done the audio books twice. It's great stuff. Do them in order because the story follows on.

He also wrote The Last Kingdom series of books. They too are fantastic. You really get into them.

If you like historical adventure with great characters I'd try either of those series'.

Has anyone read Deacon King Kong?

I've heard good things about the book, so I was thinking of picking it up.

Currently reading 'Little Book of Ollie'isms' by Ian Holloway, ex Blackpool manager, it's light hearted, full of jokes, given that all we hear of these days is Ukraine and Russia it's been a nice tonic.

I got halfway through Wolf Hall last year and put it down……jeez it’s hard work!

I was standing in a check in queue at the airport holding the book and the woman behind me asked how I was getting on with it. I said I was struggling and she laughed and said it was the hardest book to get through and she hasn’t bothered with the follow up.

Persevere with it, it gets better, I read them all Wolf Hall (2009), Bring up the Bodies (2012) and The Mirror and the Light (3 March, 2020) I am now reading the Shannara Series for the second time, brilliant series once you get into it.

Cormac McCarthy is releasing two novels this year.

Amazing news, I had given up hope of ever getting new material from him due to his age.
