Dark Souls

Dark Souls

Postby CynicalGooner » Wed Oct 05, 2011 3:54 pm

Sequel to Demon's Souls, came out in America yesterday and out in Europe on Friday. Mines in the post and will be here tomorrow woohoo. Pretty much as hardcore an RPG as you'll see these days. Out on both PS3 and Xbox

Couple reviews:

Here's the prologue vid to get you in the mood

And a bit of gameplay from early in the game featuring the first boss

Since I was probably the only one here who played Demon's Souls, it's down to me to say; get this game ya pussies it'll put hair on your chest! You'll hate it at first but then love it

Excellent

I managed to platinum DS. Don't think I will be repeating the feat

Don't you have to complete the game several times?

Yep. 3 or 4 times if you are meticulous, which I wasn't at first. I probably completed it 7 or 8 times all told. Lost my first save so had to start again as well.

Ok so I have clocked 9 hours on this since Thursday and at least 4 of them were spent being completely lost

Game is great though. Just a bit overwhelming

But is it better than Oblivion? Ive played quite a few RPGs but have never come across the epicness that is Elder Scrolls.

It's epically hard.

I've been thinking about picking up Demon's Souls because my brother and one of his good friends plays it, but I almost never play anything but FIFA.
This space used to be more fun...

They are so different, both great but focus on different things. So far for me Dark Souls is not as good as Demon's Souls because DS was the best RPG I played for a decade. And DS is better than Oblivion

If it gets its hooks in you'll play nothing else for weeks or months

Would love to but im just not sure if i have the time between FIFA, BF3 at the end of this month and then Skyim as well. It would have to be this or Skyrim (i hate having uncompleted games sat there) so not sure what to do!

What makes Dark Souls so good then in your opinion Cyn?

Just get one first then the other later. If you get Dark Souls 6 months down the line it'll be easier to consult a wiki when you're stuck.

It's so good because along with Demon's Souls, there's nothing else like it. The combat is brilliant, simple but tight and relies as much on brains as skill. Whilst the difficulty which defines the game is pretty much integral to the experience, I like it simply as an RPG and just tolerate the unforgivable nature of it. So many weapon, armour, loads of magic and miracles, you can form your guy however you like. Souls being both XP and money is also essential. The closest thing I can compare the world to is a Zelda game, its that type of open world as opposed to an Elder Scrolls or Far Cry
