Wenger tempted to stick with same side

By Richard Clarke

Arsène Wenger admits he is reluctant to rotate his team against Marseille on Tuesday night.

Arsenal are on a roll right now. They have won eight of their last nine games and another victory against the French giants would put the Emirates Stadium side in the Knockout Stages for the 12th successive season.

Wenger retained his previous Premier League side for the stunning 5-3 win at Chelsea on Saturday and, though the games have been stacking up, he may name a similar team for this crucial European clash.

"I am tempted to do it," said the manager on the eve of the game. "Sometimes if you take a team on a roll there is no need to change it. You can defend any [decision] but when a team is on a positive experience, why not? That is what I have to decide."

Wenger's attitude is shaped partly by Arsenal's experience in the past few seasons when his side took giants strides in their first few Group Stage matches but struggled to get over the line of qualification and sometimes missed out on top spot.

"I [changed players] away from home at Donetsk last season and got punished," he said.

"First we want to qualify of course. But then I did it when we were qualified and we paid a heavy price [by finishing second in the Group]. But you could finish first this season and still play Barca!"

Team news

Arsenal: Diaby (ankle), Chamakh (knee), Gibbs (stomach), Wilshere (ankle), Sagna (ankle)

Marseille: Gignac (groin), Mbia (broken metatarsal)

Referee: Paolo Tagliavento (Italy)

* Arsenal will definitely qualify for the Group Stages if they win on Tuesday night. That would give Wenger's side 10 points from four games and, crucially, a superior head-to-head against Marseille. This method is used to differentiate teams the Champions League ahead of goal difference.

Arsenal would be through because there is only one combination of results which could see two other teams reach ten points - and in that instance Wenger would still progress as results against Dortmund would be discounted.

Hope he doesn't tbh.
I know the team is doing well but this would be a perfect opportunity to rest players like Gervinho and Ramsey and bring on players like Arshavin and Rosicky, both of whom are fresh.
Could even try starting with RVP on the bench and give Park a go.

Arshavin, Rosicky, Coquelin, Park in please.
Give Arteta, gervinho and song a rest. I think Arteta played all games so far.

Djourou Vermaelen Koscielny Santos
as our defensive 4

f**k all that resting shit, we need to secure our place in the next round. We do this every year it seems, get on top of the group and then rest players and almost don't make it. Don't rest anyone until we know we're safe.

I agree with Chris... but know Wenger will rest players.

Would rather secure the group position, rotate a couple players on the weekend. Not many, just 2 or so. Problem is when Wenger rotates, the rotates 5+ at a time.

Plus the international break is coming and some of them don't even play for their teams, so they can rest then.

Forgot about the break... yeah that too!

I bet RVP starts on the bench tonight.

+1

The team has started to gel and this is the time we need to employ in-form players to secure our qualification.

Moreover Marseille is not a team you should be taking lightly .We need to win this game by fielding our best
team . We can always rest them in the coming weeks . Our next 4-5 games are against relatively easier
opponents and should allow us to rest our players.

I agree but I'm not talking about what we've done before e.g. take 6 players out and replace them with kids, I'm just talking about resting players like Ramsey and Arteta and replacing them with people like Arshavin and Rosicky.
Absolutely no drop in quality with those changes, and you can still have them on the bench if you want...

Arshavin hasn't played since the CC game a week ago and Rosicky only played for 10 minutes against Chelscum so they'll both be fresh.

So what's the story here? We've qualified regardless should we beat O.M tonight right?

But is whether or not we finish top/second dependant on our other games Vs. BvB and Olympiakos?!

Bit confused.

I see your point Inch, but I just rather be safe. Plus, Arteta will get a break next week when he's watching all the other internationals play.

That's my understanding. Win and we are mathematically at worst 2nd in the group.
