Arsenal vs Reading – Capital One Cup Preview

Postby TheArsenalPost » Tue Oct 30, 2012 12:50 pm

Arsenal will be looking for nothing but progress when they travel to Madejski Stadium to face Reading in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday evening. The Gunners started their cup campaign in terrific style notching up a 6-1 victory over Coventry and nothing but the best will do this time out as Arsenal look to put a string of poor performances behind them.

The last time the clubs met in this competition was November 2005 at Highbury. Arsenal ran out 3-0 winners with goals from Reyes, van Persie and Arturo Lupoli. Anothing result like that on Tuesday would stand the Gunners in good stead for the tough string of fixtures to come. Games at Manchester United and Schalke follow in quick succession so Arsenal will need all the confidence they can get.

Reading have their own worries failing to win a single match in the Premier League thus far McDermott might not see this as a “high priority” match and instead may favour the clash with QPR at the weekend in an attempt to lead his team to domestic safety.

We should and need to blow Reading aside. This is a great chance to rest key players (Cazorla, Arteta and so forth) and still get a solid performance from the squad. Giroud really needs to get on the score sheet to lift his season.

Score prediction: 4-0

Arsenal Team News:

Arsene Wenger will field a fairly strong, experienced line-up including pretty much everyone who did not start against QPR at the weekend (plus Olivier Giroud who did). Walcott, Arshavin, Koscielny, Djourou, Coquelin, Frimpong and Jenkinson are expected to start. There will be youth in the squad too with Gnabry, Eisfield, Miquel, Yennaris and Bellerin being involved in some capacity.

Match Facts:

Head-to-Head:

• The clubs have met 9 times with Arsenal winning on every occasion.

• The sides also met at Highbury in the League Cup in October 1967, with Arsenal winning 1-0.

Arsenal:

• The Gunners are attempting to qualify for the quarter-finals for the 10th season running, and for the 25th time in their history.

• Arsenal have lost four of their last six League Cup games away from home.

• They have won six of their last nine matches against Premier League opposition in this competition.

• After Pat Rice scored the winning goal at Elm Park in 1972 in the F.A. Cup, he described his effort as ‘a tasty goal.’ The chant ‘Pat Rice, tasty goal!’ subsequently followed him for the rest of his playing career at Arsenal.

Reading:

• Brian McDermott played as a midfielder for Arsenal between 1978 till 1984. Reading also have Staurt Taylor in their ranks, who played for Arsenal between 1997-2005. Steve Sidwell, James Harper and Graham Stack have also been nurtured by Arsenal’s academy and subsequently played for Reading.

• The Royals could reach the League Cup quarter-finals for the third time in their history. They have never gone further than the last eight.

• Victory against QPR in the third round is their only win in their last seven League Cup games against Premier League opposition.

Thank you. I have had a few site issues of late so I apologize for that.

I noticed only now a lot of comments mounting up over the past few articles from yourself and a few others on here, all greatly appreciated. I changed the commenting structure so I no longer have to approve things, so if it's a little slow. Sorry, be patient. :)
