He had to because UKIP were gaining momentum and he made that promise to avoid losing seats (which certainly would have happened in Thanet and Boston for example) If he pulled out, the tories would have taken a serious pounding at the next election like the Lib Dems because he knew what would happen if he double-crossed the voters over that.
So in the end, we all have Nigel Farage to thank for giving us the choice.
