Prime Minister David Cameron has pledged the UK will accept "thousands" more Syrian refugees.
The British government had been under increasing pressure to offer refuge to more of those arriving in Europe from countries including Syria.
Mr Cameron has said that the UK will provide resettlement for "thousands more" refugees. They will come from UN camps bordering Syria and not from those already in Europe, he said.
He stressed the importance of finding long-term solutions and said Britain would act with its "head and heart".
Mr Cameron has stressed that Britain is the second-largest bilateral donor supporting Syrian refugees in the region.
About £900m of UK money has been spent since 2012 on food, tents and other humanitarian aid.
