You know where Creationism is actually taught in US government run schools? Any guess?
I'll clue you in. In Native American schools run by the Dept of Education and Bureau of Indian affairs in conjunction with sovereign tribes such as The Crow, Northern Cheyenne, Lakota Sioux in North and South Dakota , The Chippewa Band on several reservations from Minnesota through to Montana. It is also taught in Islamic dominated public schools in Michigan, New Jersey and I think I read in one school district in Minneapolis which caters to thousands of Somali-Americans.
That's the problem with trying to use religion as a political tool or banning it as a even a teachable subject.
As for the US elections, this impeachment is interesting in that the Dem Party is engaging in the equivalent of the Battle of Balaclava.
Which is all illegal btw. We have separation of church and state law here, so technically they're all breaking that law, since public schools are ran by the Govt. And if Mike Pence had it his way he'd have it in every school, and we'd all sink back into the dark ages of ignorance.
I think teaching ABOUT various religions is a good thing and certainly does not violate Article Six nor does it contradict Jefferson's explanation of what has now been called "separation of Church and State" which language does not appear in the Constitution. His letter was in support of a minor Christian sect that was being discriminated against for their beliefs, which was the original intent of the Founders...to allow for free expression of religious liberty. Afterall, many of the first immigrants from Europe were fleeing religious persecution. The fear of the founders was about freedom from religious tyranny as was happening in Britain and across Europe. How that has been mangled into public schools not even allowing prayers on football fields is crazy. I am agnostic BTW.
When has Pence said that was his goal? That I have seen ascribed to the man, but there is no evidence that I am aware of that it is anything beyond leftist fear mongering and hyperbole. Especially given Article Six would never allow public schools to teach or promote any one religion over another.
The irony I was pointing out is that Christianity is deemed as the "dark ages of ignorance" to use your phrase, when courts recognize Native religious beliefs such as "sacred" places, communicating with the creator through vision quests and the like as perfectly acceptable reasons to be considered in litigation and law. I strongly suspect that you would not call Native Americans who hold traditional religious beliefs ignorant and backwards would you?
Yes I'm aware of why it was put into our Govt. And the establishment clause that is like reading the bible, and can be interpreted different ways, but off of that other laws have been made. But I whole heartedly disagree. Keep religion at home and only at home, it has no place in academia. And yes, it does violate laws. Because the Freedom From Religion Foundation is suing schools and winning for these very things. If it wasn't a law, then how can they be winning the cases?
Because Pence came before the court and there is even a video of it, before he was Vice President, and asked for the Govt to change its laws to legally allow creationism to be taught in schools along side evolution. Again if it wasn't illegal, why he would be asking for change?
I didn't call anyone ignorant, nor would I, but lets be honest, pretty much any religious belief is bat shit crazy.
And you don't know America very well if you think a public school wouldn't allow Christian prayer over any other. It has already happened buddy, and in several different cases. Especially in the south, where religion rules. Of course they want their kid praying to the Christian god, and not a Muslim one. So in order to avoid having to have every religion present in a public school, the obvious solution would be to ban all of them.
