I've always thought that if I become a parent I'd tell embarrassing stories about my kids really loudly instead of smacking

Different approach for different kids. Some have an understanding that their behaviour is wrong, they need a bit of a hiding.

Some children don't grasp the understanding until much older, then it's about tolerancy and sensible discipline.

It's not even worth debating, it's common sense. You all know what category your kid/s fall into.
