Restorative justice

Postby gzagee » Mon Nov 21, 2011 8:26 am

If you were a victim member of the local community would you opt to meet the culprit?
Do you think this sort of process; introduced to help the victim by confronting the offender and, possibly helping the offender to avoid repeating criminal behaviour in future, is something you would use?

Does it work?

Depends on the crime.

If it was someone who'd say raped and killed my missus/daughter then if i met them i would try to kill them.

If it was something minor yea.
Although i think any teens commiting crimes against people especially the elderly should be made to face their victims.

Restorative justice

Postby Arsenal Tone » Mon Nov 21, 2011 8:41 pm

My school uses it. I've seen both sides.

I've seen kids absolutely mortified as they've had to sit and listen to the effects of their behaviour on the victim, the victim's family and then to their mum break down whilst describing the effects on their own family. I've seen it really change kids.

On the other hand I've also seen kids sit there and take the piss.

Victim's choice of course.

But what if it doesn't have the desired effects... what if a rapist laughs in the face of his victims?

Tough one.

Most rape victims probably wouldn't want to confront their attacker, and if Fabrestuta ran the world they would never have to choose as rape would be punishable with the death penalty.

In regard to other crimes I am sure a lot of people might get some personal closure with coming face to face with the person who committed it and how it affected them.

Not a great idea unless the cirme is relatively small and non-physical, or if the perp is a minor and can see the actual impact of stupid decisions. There are some sociopath's out there who are not going to care who they hurt. Could easily end up retarumatizing the victim if things don't go to script.
