Is FaceBook a waste of time?

Postby Gunner Down Under » Tue Aug 16, 2011 7:14 am

I've been hounded for at least a year now to get it, personally I don't think I ever will but there's this nagging sense at the back of me saying that I will.
But the thing I have about it is that I reckon it's a massive waste of time. From what my friends get up to it's a 'fantastic socialising tool' where everyone comments about absolute shit all the time (well this is coming from my perspective as a 15 year old) and plenty of people here are at least double my age and use it for different things, notably finding old friends again.

Personally I can find two good reasons for it- finding old friends (eg friends from primary school) or talking to girls (:)). However I think that every other reason for it is a waste of time, and for me the cons completely take over and wipe the pros off the map.

Now my social life isn't great (actually its more appalling lol) and I wonder is that due to me not getting FB and either not finding out about things or just not being connected?

if i were young again i would get out there and do it,it does not take long and you get out of bed and say f**k me my hip was working yesterday. F/B is good if you have family or freinds that live away like me i have family in the north island here and alot of old freinds there, while i live in the south island i am hoping to move home soon.

Facebook's on the slide now anyway, Google+ will be bigger than it in a few years IMO
you might be missing some things, but it is no substitute for IRL interraction
facebook isn't magically going to make anyone's social life great

i use it to keep up with friends and family and stay in contact with them easily. plus, when you "like" stuff that you're interested in, you get updates all the time. i use that kind of as a news source, and is how i get a lot of my information about things. i'm on it "alot" i suppose, but i don't post daily or play those stupid games they have on there. i just use it for information basically. can't hurt being on it.

As long as you don't get obsessed with it and update you status every 5 minutes like some sad W****rs then it's a good idea to have a profile.

It wont sort your social life out but you might find you get invited to more events. People make event pages for partis, trips, nights out etc.

Tips:
Leave your status the f**k alone unless you have something important/funny/interesting to say (don't inform people that you just had a lovely shower followed by a relieving scratch).
Don't spend hours looking at other people's profiles (facebook stalking) unless maybe they've just come back from their holidays and you're checking out their holiday pics... or something like that.
If you find yourself giving too much consideration for your facebook profile picture (either changing it every other day or taking pictures on your mobile specifically for your profile photo... like a little bitch) then slap yourself round the face really f**king hard!

im always on facebook, find it a great way to keep up with friends, i have mine sorted into lists, so i can limit what i share, got some people from here on there, as you get older & lose touch with people its also great for finding old friends.
i use it for cheesy little games alot lately!

And whatever you do dont add work colleagues or if you do dont say jack shit about work! ;)

The only reason why I like facebook is because my wife spends alot of time on it, which means less time bitching at me. :)

Until about 23, then it's just a work distraction or an annoyance.

Then you are a sad case, sorry i'm not sugar coating it for you.

Faceache isn't a complete waste of time, i used it to find old friends and catch up, thats about it. In all other areas its a waste of time, it also causes trouble.

A lot of big partys or events are organized on Facebook thesedays, mainly because its so much easier to communicate to everyone at once. I've got a facebook app on my blackberry so im never off the bloody thing. :hiding:
