Should snoods be banned?

Postby Trina » Fri Feb 04, 2011 2:50 pm

Fifa is set to discuss whether snoods should be banned on safety grounds at an International FA Board meeting.

The neck-warmers have become a popular trend in the Premier League this season after they emerged during the previous campaign.

A number of top-flight stars such as Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri are regular wearers of snoods, but they could be banned as they are not officially-sanctioned kit.

Certain clubs have already prohibited players from donning snoods internally, with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson banning them outright.

The IFAB, the game's law-making body, will discuss the issue on 5th March and a decision is then set to be made.

A Fifa spokesman said: "We want a debate over the snood and whether it could be dangerous.

"There may be a safety issue - if for example a player was running through on goal and an opponent grabbed his snood, that could pose a potential danger to his neck."
Criticism

Snoods have divided opinion in the footballing world, with sceptics questioning their arrival in the modern game.

Roy Keane has declared his opposition to the garment, saying: "They've all gone soft. I don't know how they do it and focus on the game, it's weird. That's the way the game's gone."

... but they look so pretty :hiding:

In all seriousness, the argument is sound. If someone grabs your snood while you're running then you'll feel the whip lash! And the neck isn't a part of your body you wanna f**k about with. But at the same time, if they've used them for this long without there being any snood related injuries then maybe they just need to allow them until there is an injury.

I don't know how they can run around for 90 minutes wearing what is basically a scalf, and not overheat!

Just mentioned it on SSN saying that offical's think they could be dangerous.
I remember that players used to wear necklaces(Even Wrighty did) and now they are banned because of the same issue.

Can't believe I actually agree with keane. Damn!!

They have gone soft, everyone has this day and age though. They should just make a rule stating that if you wear one, you have to also wear a sign saying I'm a softie.

The club should ban them from matches on the grounds that they look poncy. But banning on safety measures... really? ....really?

If they decide not to ban them, then if a player wants to wear one it should be mandated that it is bright pink. They should also be forced to wear a tutu instead of shorts.

I can't really see the fuss, it's a neck warmer. If players want to wear them and look like little girls, let them.

Does super Nas no harm, neither Tevez.

Anyone who has ever excercised, played football, done something that gets them out of breath etc in cold weather would know that once the adrenalyn gets going you don't feel cold.

I can't even wear gloves etc when i excercise in cold weather as after a while my hands get all clammy.

Get rid, all it takes its one idiot to reach up and grab it by mistake and there could be a serious neck injury.

All players have to warm up prior to the game, blood pumping, adrenalin for the game etc.

Unless he did not excercise prior to the game and is completely calm then he might feel a bit chilly.

In the NFL, if a player has long hair and chooses to let it hang out of his helmet, you're allowed to grab it and use it to bring them down.
