Average speed cameras in urban areas FFS!

Postby Goose » Mon Dec 07, 2009 7:43 pm

The government plans to introduce average speed cameras in all urban areas, it will track cars for over 15 miles and drivers will not be allowed to go over a 20mph average speed

Average speed cameras are set to be introduced into residential areas from next year.

The government has approved the Spec3 cameras and plans to roll them out in 2010 with the aim of enforcing a 20mph speed limit in urban areas.

Camden, Southwark and Waltham Forrest will be among eight London boroughs to pioneer the cameras. Along with Norwich and York, they will also follow Portsmouth and introduce a blanket 20mph limit on all residential roads.

Research carried out by the Department for Transport in London claims that cutting the speed limit to 20mph makes these areas much safer for road users. According to the research, only one in forty pedestrians dies when hit at 20mph compared with one in five hit at 30mph.

The cameras will be connected to each other wirelessly - allowing them to track cars for up to 15 miles, monitoring their average speed.

More than 100 average speed cameras have already been installed at accident black spots and motorways.

They have these things in Nottingham. It's not as though the place isn't a nightmare to drive through in the first place!

A couple of years ago I was taking a work van through near the City Hospital, and didn't even spot them (not that you can actually miss them  ) and the van broke down before I triggered the far end. That would have been a nailed on three points and £60 fine but for good old Ford technology!

Seeing as DVLA have pinched my licence, that cuts me to the core.

I did once get 55mph out of a Volvo Citybus, pedal to the metal with a tail wind.

OUCH! That must hammer your already expensive insurance.

I got ten points a few years ago for being drunk in charge (yeah, what a surprise!) so it sort of made sure I never speeded. As a result my licence has been clean for the best part of ten years, and that was the only thing I have ever been done for. Well until some DVLA geek pinched it off me for having a condition not recognised by the people that pay the social handouts

Just as a matter of interest, how much does it cost you to insure that beast? PM me the model etc, and I'll compare from here (Full no claims here, never had an accident in my life)

I got an amazing deal from an insurer that specialises in rare sports cars and it was £450 which is incredible because the nearest other quote I got to that was about £1200 with a £500 excess!

I'm astounded actually, I can usually rip people apart on insurance. The best I can find so far for your motor Inch is £422-10 FC and that's with Tesco. (£50 excess though)
