Arsenal 0 - 1 Newcastle

Arsenal 0 - 1 Newcastle

It was a eagerly awaited game, to see how the team responds after the midweek loss to Shaktar in the Champions League.
Spirits and hopes were high as the manager talks up the team's chances and also having beaten Newcastle previously in the Carling Cup. But it was not meant to be.

Big cheers met the news of the surprise inclusion of Robin Van Persie on the substitutes bench. Apparently he had recovered sufficiently to warrant a place on the bench.

First team line up read : Fabianski, Clichy, Squillaci, Koscielny, Sagna, Fabregas, Wilshere, Song, Nasri, Walcott and Chamakh.

On the bench were : Szczesny, Djourou, Eboue, Rosicky, Arshavin, van Persie, Bendtner.

The game started in lively fashion, with the Newcastle front pair of Ameobi and Carroll pushing the centrebacks hard with their running and physical presence. It proved to be an intriguing battle between the 2 pairs.

The clear chances of the first half fell to the Arsenal, with the freekick taken by Fabregas being the most eye catching.
From a freekick awarded after Coloccini brought down Wishere, Fabregas' freekick took a deflection off Carroll which sent the ball onto the post. Krul was beaten but the ball cannoned high up and allowed him time to recover and tip the ball over the bar. Tough luck.

A few more chances came and went, but largely the Newcastle back four stood resolute in the face Arsenal pressure.
Up till now Newcastle had not mustered a single shot on goal, and how ironic it was that they scored with their first chance on goal.

Gutierrez was judged to have been fouled by Sagna and from the resulting freekick, Barton floated a diagonal ball into the Arsenal box. It was a routine catch for most keepers and many expected Fabiakski to catch the ball based on his recent performances. However he misjudged his jump and allowed the towering Carroll to escape from his marker Chamakh and head the ball into an empty goal.
1 nil to the Barcodes, and Fabianski flapped again.

That proved to be the final kick of the game as referee blew for halftime immediately after the restart.

2nd half started with the Arsenal trying to force their way back in, with Walcott almost grabbing an equalizer in the first 5 minutes. Walcott found his way into the Newcastle box after a fine pass by Wilshere and let fly. Unfortunately the shot cannoned off the bottom of the bar and out into safety. Tough luck again.

More chances came and Song had a shot as well, but couldn't convert it.
Sensing he had to do something, Wenger played his cards.

Off came Chamkh and Nasri, who had looked a tad bit uncomfortable after a whack on his shin in the first half.
On came Arshavin and Van Persie. Cue the cheers for the returning Dutchman.

Still the chances were hard to comeby and against a Newcastle defence holding firm and not letting an inch, Wenger threw on Bendtner for Wilshere.

By now, Arsenal was lining up with 4-2-4, with Arshavin looking the likeliest amongst the subs to score.

In the dying moments of the game, Arshavin tricked his way towards the byline and managed to send his cross towards Fabregas who was standing free in the middle. Yet his header was too straight towards Krul who snatched it and averted the danger.

It was turning out to be a bad day at the office and soon it became worse.
Kosicleny tussled with a Newcastle sub Ranger and the striker went to ground. Referee adjudged Koscielny to be the last defender and promptly showed him the 2nd red card of his very short Arsenal career.
There was an arguement that Squillaci was covering ground but it proved irrelevant as Arsenal had been beaten by a well-organised Newcastle team.

Next up Wolves at the Molineux in the midweek. A chance for redemption and hopefully to get things back on track.

i was dissapointed by this game, not the response wanted aftwer the result of the midweek game.
We cant afford to be dropping poins agaist the weaker teams, unless we get them against the big teams, but no one can guarantee that.
