Arsenal 4 – 1 Bolton Wanderers

After a seemingly never ending international break (why on earth have one right at the start of the season?!) Arsenal got back down to business with a win over the Trotters (who looked more like Chelsea in their blue away kit) The scoreline flattered the gunners somewhat but the 3 points now mean we are lying in second having just dropped the 2 in 4 games so far.

We lined up as follows: Almunia in goal, a defence of Eboue, Gibbs, Koscielny and making his debut, Squillaci, in front of them: Fabregas, Rosicky, Wilshere, Song, Arshavin and Chamukh. Sagna and Clichy rested as we go into one of the busier periods of the season.

The game started out without any major fireworks from either side. Arshavin was put through by Roisicky 1-1 with the keeper but Boltons 3rd Choice Ron Weasley look alike keeper Adam Bogdan saved well with his leg and was to have a good game despite letting 4 in. That was our best chance til the 24th minute when ex Bolton Loanee Jack Wilshere crossed in for Chamakh to put the ball in to the back post for Koscielny to knock in his first goal for the club after a deflection off Bogdan. A bit scrappy but they all count!

Just as the fair weather gooners were leaving shortly before half time to get their pies in before the queues started Bolton scored an unlikely goal. Whilst Arsenal hadn’t been setting the world alight, neither had they and the crowd seemed a bit stunned when Elmander equalized after some rather dodgy defending from the Arsenal and Koscielny in particular whose error headed the ball into the penalty area and the path of Lee Chong yong whose cross allowed Johan Elmander to head in his 3rd of the season.

After half time Chamakh found himself one on one with only the keeper to beat but yet again Bogdan made a fine save, shortly after though Chamakh did find the net to put Arsenal 2-1 up after a good cross from Fabregas was met by a powerful header from the Moroccan.

Controversy reigned after this as Bolton defender Gary Cahill was shown a straight red after a late tackle on Chamakh. Cahill was possibly unlucky to be sent off and not yellow carded, particularly after Bolton were denied a legitimate free kick seconds before the incident took place, the Bolton players surrounded the referee in protest and it was several minutes before play resumed. (If Cahill could consider himself lucky to be sent off the pitch then Davies and Robinson could consider themselves lucky to still be on. The former after several yellow card worthy tackles and Robinson after an extremely late challenge on substitute Diaby who was then later substituted himself)

If Arsenal had not got a grip on the game before then they certainly had now as the sending off seemed to suck the life out of Bolton. Alex Song scored our third from a tight angle before Vela on in the 80th minute finished an exquisite piece of play by the gunners – 26 passes, each greeted by an ‘Ole!’ by the goner faithful before Fabregas chipped a beautiful ball over the Bolton defence for Vela to run onto and calmly push past the out rushing Bogdan.

The scoreline certainly flattered us and Almunia despite not being very troubled had a very flappy game. Several times passing not very coolly back across his own goal area nearly letting Bolton through. 3 points in the bag and perhaps we didn’t really need to step up a gear as Bolton did not give us as thorough a test as we are used to but we will have to improve further still if we want to win the league.
